Patrick Benson shares details about the nonprofit organization, War Horses for Veterans, a unique program that’s had great success in helping veterans transition from combat to civilian life through the use of horse-related activities. Patrick is an Army veteran who served in the infantry from 1998 to 2004. His deployment to Iraq in 2003 and his numerous military operations enable his understanding of the physical and emotional strain on our combat veterans. As a professional horseman, he manages a training and breeding program for performance horses. Patrick experienced firsthand the effectiveness of working with horses during his transition to civilian life. He is a co-founder and director of War Horses for Veterans.

Dr. Tyra Manning shares about her book Where the Water Meets the Sand, a story of one military wife’s triumph over mental illness, addiction, and loss. Tyra’s husband was killed during the Vietnam War while on a top-secret mission near the Laotian jungle. She learned of his death while she was hospitalized at the Menninger Clinic, where she was being treated for depression, just two weeks before their daughter’s 2nd birthday. Dr. Manning persevered through her depression and addiction, ultimately earning a doctorate in education from the University of Kansas and becoming one of the nation’s top school superintendents. She has devoted her 40-year career to helping children achieve their highest potential. Since retiring in 2004, Dr. Manning’s mission has been to share her personal journey of hope with people who are experiencing depression, addiction, and loss.

AWTR Show 581: The Travis Manion Foundation

Guest, Albie Masland discusses the Travis Manion Foundation, an organization that assists and supports our nation’s veterans and the families of fallen heroes. Albie first came into contact with the Travis Manion Foundation in 2012 when he ran 3,025 miles coast-to-coast across the U.S. to honor fallen heroes, while also raising money for the foundation. The experience left Albie with a desire to continue working in the veteran affairs field. An opportunity arose for Albie in the San Diego office of the Travis Manion Foundation, where he first served as a community outreach coordinator and facilitated events for the Mentorship and Advocacy Program (MAP-V). Albie also serves as an Ambassador for the Character Does Matter Program, a youth program based on leadership, courage, integrity, and service.

Elizabeth Peace is here to discuss how military families can help stop child abuse in their own homes and communities. Elizabeth is a published author, communications director for Congress, and a former TV news anchor and journalist. A survivor of child sexual abuse and the mother of a survivor, Elizabeth is passionate about using her story to inspire others to overcome their trials, and she spends her time teaching parents, educators, and city officials how to prevent child sex abuse. She’s the founder of Pledge to Prevent, a partnership with city officials to commit to ending child sexual abuse in their cities. She has met with Hunter Biden and other prominent figures to prevent abuse on a national level and is actively working to enact legislation that would make sex crimes committed against children punishable with prison time instead of probation.

AWTR Show 579: The Mathews Men

On this episode of AWTR, author William Geroux talks about his book The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler’s U-boats. William’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Associated Press, and other regional magazines. He’s worked for Maesrk, the largest container-shipping company in the world, but it was while working for Richmond Times-Dispatch as a newspaper reporter that William first heard the stories of U-boats operated off American shores.
