Somewhere in early 2016 I discovered a fitness group that would alter the overall course of my life; I just didn’t know it then. Melissa would lead regular workout sessions in a few places around Fort Carson, and every meetup would vary in group size, experience, and of course, the workouts. Melissa’s positivity was tangible, infectious, and she made us believers. Believers in her, believers in ourselves, and believers in the group. She is what made Body Blast more than just a way to pass the time, but a lifelong pursuit for me.
Consistency in the Inconsistent: Helping Military Children with Special Needs
Consistency is essential in building safe boundaries yet still showing love and care to a child.
Consistency can also help a child feel safe because they’ll always know someone is there to love them and take care of their essential needs as a human. Consistency in the military is almost an oxymoron. As the sun rises every day, I know that my service member’s plans with the military have changed in some aspect. There’s a running joke between military spouses when someone asks how long our service members will be gone, when we’re moving, or where we’re moving, and the answer is usually, “I don’t know.”
The Uncivil Civil War: Brothers in Arms
Percival Drayton, captain of the USS Pocahontas, was saddened that not only had the country become so divided, but this divisiveness made its way down to his family unit. His older brother, Thomas, loyal to his native region of the south, took up arms against Percy’s formidable northern charge for freedom for all. Although the brothers met as enemies at Port Royal, November 1861, they both survived the battle.
My Top 5 Kitchen Essentials
Today, I’m sharing my top five kitchen essentials. When bringing items into my home I try to make sure the item is multipurpose. Ideally, I’d prefer using a simplistic approach, however, that isn’t always the case.
7 Misconceptions of the National Guard
There was a time in my life when I knew nothing about the National Guard. All I knew was what I learned in history class about their role with the Little Rock Nine. I also knew that I saw them after tornado outbreaks in my state.
Kindness from a Stranger
We recently made the big move from Germany to Fort Lee, Virginia. That on its own sounds daunting, but roll in the fact we did it with an 8-year-old and triplet 3-year-olds, and we were a walking circus! As with every move, there were highs and lows with emotions and all the frustrations that come from living out of a suitcase for months and packing and repacking more times than you can count. So, by the time we finished the first leg of our trip from Germany to Washington, D.C., I was an exhausted mother running on fumes and barely able to keep the smile on my face.
