Welcome to Colorado!

Colorado Springs is ranked the nation’s “Most Desirable Place to Live” by U.S. News & World Report for a second straight year.

Whether you’re a fun-in-the-sun type of gal, have a need to speed down snowy slopes, or have to roar down some rapids, The Springs has something for you. Not only will you probably love your time in Colorado, but you’ll do things you might never have done before, see things you’ve never seen before, and like many retirees before you, you might not want to leave.

How to Empower Other Military Spouses

I think most of us, whether we’ve been a spouse for one year or 20, know how it feels to be powerless in our role of “dependent.” Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting an uphill battle in our day-to-day life as our spouse trains for and fights in real battles. Many of us know what it feels like to feel completely alone. Maybe you’ve wanted to change that. Maybe you’re tired of seeing spouses tear each other down when our circumstances often do that enough already. Instead, maybe you’re looking for ways to build each other up.

Here are some stepping stones that can lead to the empowerment of one another as military spouses:

Fort Carson on a Budget

Fort Carson is in one of the fastest growing areas of Colorado and is one of the most highly sought-after duty stations. While isn’t as easy on the wallet as, let’s say, Fort Sill, it still has a better cost of living than San Diego, and yet it’s just as easy on the eyes. The sunsets are gorgeous, the night skies are breathtaking, and the weather isn’t too shabby either. While they can still have snowstorms in May, it isn’t the frequency of Fort Drum, and the presence of snow isn’t anywhere near the consistency of Alaska.

Summer time is upon us. It’s the season of BBQ, pools, beaches, and carefree sunny days.

Or a season of chucking all of your earthly possessions into a truck hopefully headed for a new duty station, repeatedly throwing your kids some chicken nuggets in the back row for the 32-hour drive, and reminding yourself that you won’t get any of your husband’s SGLI if you murder him for stopping for the 500,000th time for a pee break.

This is also known as PCS season.

D-Day: 75th Anniversary Reflections

As I reflect on my last couple days in Normandy, France, I am still struggling for words. My two days in the most northern part of France comprised of tiny hamlet communities that skirt the English Channel would be a picturesque seaside summer vacation destination…except.

Except that the soft sandy beaches have seen more death than should be allowed.

The gorgeous sheered off cliffs have watched young men heroically traipse their rock face against horrific odds and suffering far too many causalities.

The hedgerows have hidden and provided God-given mercy to local residents.

The churches have heard the cries of dying men pleading for their God or their mom or their wife.

Time

I was sitting in a Chick-fil-A play area next to an old friend after we both recently moved to the same area of a brand new state. Her husband is a civilian doctor. Mine plays with tanks for a living.

We talked about how crazy and hectic the last two months had been since we made this place our home. I droned on and on about the church, co-op, and activities we’d joined, the housing fix-me-ups we’d done, and the friends we’d made.
