The Power of Mentorship

The Power of Mentorship

My husband and I got married days before my 25th birthday. While I was older than other spouses in the same peer group, I felt so young and inexperienced. I felt like a fish out of water.

No Longer Just a Resume

No Longer Just a Resume

Gone are the days when you can type up a resume, submit it to a job posting online or hand it to a recruiter at a hiring fair, and know that your work is done.

Now, if you want to be competitive in the job market, you need a self-marketing plan that includes your resume and a well-crafted LinkedIn profile.

These tools are the two most common ways a recruiter or hiring manager will get to know the professional you and understand the value you can add to their organization.

They’re Saying Aspergers

They’re Saying Aspergers

Ten years. It had been 10 years since I delivered my last baby boy, and I was telling the nurse that if she didn’t grab a doctor immediately, she or my husband would have to try to play catch.

Everything since that moment has been a ruck I was not equipped for.

I look back through photos and I see it more clearly now. Isaiah always had this almost constant anxiety/intensity about him, this more focused look in his eyes. I remember bringing it up to a doctor once, but she didn’t think too much of it.

Experience Counts for Something

Experience Counts for Something

Have you ever noticed how, in society, experience seems to count for very little? Well, depending on how old you are as you read this, you may not feel it as much as those of us who come with lots of “experience!”

It’s true, I’m not as comfortable with all the ins and outs of my computer as you may be, but I’m pretty good at knowing how to have a conversation that leads to a promotion or new business.

You’re right, I might not live to communicate everything through a text message, but I’m great at sending a handwritten thank you note or letter that someone actually hangs up on the wall above their desk.

That said, I recently discovered one area where experience counts for everything! A happy marriage.

PCS Stress-less

PCS Stress-less

I cringe a little every time I see a military spouse post something on a Facebook page that says something like, “Okay, ladies, first PCS here. What do I need to know?”

I don’t internally cringe because it’s a bad or inappropriate question, only that it’s so dang open-ended. Most seasoned spouses can give you hours of tips and advice on a variety of different parts of a PCS.

“My leave’s been approved.”

Such a sweet string of words for any milspouse to hear, and the beginning of yet another military countdown.

The days that followed consisted of lists, prioritizing, planning, and goal setting; everything was entered into my calendar. What could go wrong, right? Well, as any seasoned milspouse knows… lots!
