And now I’ll be singing songs from The Sound of Music all day long. There are worse things, I suppose.
But this post is not about awesome musicals—it’s about the top five things I like best about Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, right outside of Anchorage, Alaska.
Being a military spouse can be pretty tough at times. You’re sometimes far from where you call home and surrounded by different people every few years. Things can get tough, and sometimes, it’s hard to keep an optimistic perspective on everything. My daughter is 2, and she has opened me up to seeing things differently than I did prior to having her in my life. I love seeing the world through her eyes. I’ve realized there’s a lot to learn about life from a 2-year-old. I know that sounds a little off, but it’s true.
Moving all the time must be so hard, they say.
It has to be challenging to live in a new place every few years, they say.
Yet, when I stand in the middle of our new home and look around at the empty space, empty walls, and empty cupboards…
I don’t see the challenges.
On our journey of military life we tend to only think of our friends as our battle buddies. Truth is, there are many types of battle buddies. From your friends, neighbors, spouse, even unit members, all the way down to your pets. One battle buddy pairing that is often left unrecognized is the one of you and your child. You are your child’s biggest cheerleader, their rock, and their example. How you handle this military life and the energy you put into their success on the journey is imperative to their well-being.
Six months.
I’ve been writing down one thing I am thankful for every day for six months (January, February, March, April, and May), and I’m surprised I’m still finding things for which to be thankful.
We moved, again. No, we aren’t PCSing, at least not anytime soon. This move was a surprise move due to a landlord issue, and it only took us about half a mile from our previous home.
I’m not mad. I’ll forget all about having to pack my own household goods, renting the U-haul, trying to lift crazy heavy furniture and wiggle it through doors (even having to take doors off the hinges), and finally unpacking it all.
