If you’re married to the military, chances are you know something about long distance relationships. Deployments, training, circumstances that prevent us from PCSing with our service members, there are a million different reasons we wind up separated from our other halves, sometimes by hundreds or even thousands of miles.
We have been a one-income family for seven years. In that time, we have moved five times, had two children, Big Sarge put another deployment under his belt, and he was also promoted twice.
The extra money from the deployment and promotions gave us a little more financial peace of mind, but I always have in my mind the days of “famine.”
My husband is currently deployed.
Before they left out, they received orders with a set number of days on them. It was put out that anything beyond those days would take the approval of a high-ranking officer. All of that sounds really great, and from my recent experience, soldiers have been returning in that originally publicized window.
However, I’ve learned that orders are nothing more than a piece of paper.
September is National Preparedness Month, started by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 2004. They chose September because of the events of 9/11, and they encourage every American to be ready for disasters, whether natural or man-made.
As most of you know Team Crooks just relocated to Lantana, Texas, a civilian community/special assignment near Denton. We love our neighborhood; it’s beautiful. The only problem is that almost everyone here is new due to the homes being new construction. It was the first time we’ve moved somewhere and not been welcomed by a neighbor.
So you just PCS’d (moved away) from your happy little home with all your best battle buddies to your new unsettled home where you know no one.
Now what?
Or, you just got married to the military this past summer, and now you’re in a foreign land, which doesn’t necessarily mean Germany, Puerto Rico, or Japan.
