Don’t feel bad—many people don’t know where to start. These military social events are not as scary as you might think. Even if you don’t like coffee you should still attend because, chances are, coffee won’t even be involved. The point of this military custom is camaraderie.
So, we are a few weeks into a year-long deployment. So far, we are doing okay. The first few days were tough.
Then, we had Cub Scouts Day Camp.
Big Sarge is getting moved to Fort Richardson, Alaska. Since he’s received these orders, the report date has changed three times.
Whenever the mysterious “branch” is mentioned, I have a vision in my head of a Jabba the Hutt-type character, with a map and a calendar on the wall, holding a dart with Big Sarge’s name on it. And when she threw the dart at the calendar, she didn’t really throw it hard enough, and it fell out. That’s why the date keeps changing. She has to keep re-throwing the dart.
The kids are out of school, and the sun is blazing. Yep, it is summer vacation!
Like a majority of others, summer is the time for family trips, and I have been busy trying to figure out all the typical stuff, where to go, how much to spend, how are we going to get there, you know how the story goes.

Here in the Crooks household, June is a huge month for celebrations. It isn’t only the month of my husband’s birthday, but it’s also Father’s Day.
This year, Father’s Day will be celebrated with Daddy many, many miles away. We couldn’t let his two special days go by unnoticed, even if we were so far apart.
When I was asked to write a blog for Memorial Day, was excited and jumped on it. Then, ten minutes later it hit me—I had no idea what I was going to write about.
What is Memorial Day, anyway? I talked to my husband, and he wasn’t even 100% sure.
I went to Google and typed in “what is M-E-” and the first suggestion was, “What is Memorial Day.”
Really.
