Dear Mr. Dad: My wife and I are thinking about keeping our five-year-old son out of kindergarten until he turns six. We have friends who’ve done the same thing and they say that it gave children a lot of advantages. But is it really a good idea?
My family and I have experienced three separations: one unaccompanied tour to Korea and two deployments to Iraq. We have been lucky to have been on a TRADOC (Training & Doctrine) installation for the last three and a half years, which means that my husband hasn’t deployed in almost four years.
That all changes this month.
The military child, or military brat as some call them, are a special breed of kid. They learn things and sacrifice more in life than most kids their age. With April being the Month of the Military Child, many military installations and organizations are taking time to honor and celebrate these special children.
And no, it is not the perennial graduation, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!. Which I will admit, I have never read, nor received as a graduation gift. I know, I know—I am the exception to the rule.
I realized this military spouse lesson while reading Green Eggs and Ham to my 5-year-old the other night.
I can’t remember much of anything.
Seriously, it isn’t one of my finer traits.
But, I can remember exactly what I wore, exactly where I was, exactly who I was with, and exactly how I felt every single time my service member has deployed.
