Ah, February.
A whole month of this new year has quickly passed by, and it’s now been two months since my husband returned from Iraq. It seems like just yesterday we were anxiously awaiting his return in that cold airplane hangar. And then there are other days when it feels like he has been home forever and that the long deployment was only a bad dream.
Many people see the new year as a chance to make resolutions for the year to come. Some want to lose weight, and others want to change careers or save more money. I like to see resolutions more as personal goals for the new year. Things that you want to accomplish and goals that you can strive toward.
I have always loved this poem.
Perhaps it’s because I harbor grand schemes of doing great things.
While Halloween is not my favorite holiday of the year, it is one that I always look forward to, as it marks the start of the holiday season. I know that Christmas decor has been up and for sale in the stores for well over a month now, but to me, it is not really the holiday season until Halloween. Thanksgiving is a little more than three weeks away, and Christmas will soon follow.
This past week, we reached the six-month mark of this deployment. We’re halfway to the finish! Halfway to Daddy being home. Halfway to feeling his arms wrapped around me again. Halfway to not solo-parenting anymore!
We’ve reached six months with only a few bumps along the way, and I’m incredibly impressed and amazed that we are actually here.
I remember asking my friends that question while we were walking home. We were scared and confused, but we truly had no grasp on the gravity of the situation.
Sept. 11, 2001, wasn’t a typical school day from the start. At the time, I was a senior in high school. I attended Cathedral High School, an all-girl prep school, in mid-town Manhattan, approximately four miles from the World Trade Center.
