A few weeks ago, my husband called to give me his anticipated homecoming date. I was ecstatic to hear that; while still a ways off. the date was earlier than I expected. Time to prepare for reintegration
I’m not letting myself write it down until he’s on the plane though… I’m too accustomed to plans changing.
Because…military life.
Some people say, “live each day as if he deploys tomorrow.” In a way, it sounds great, but then life happens when deployment isn’t on the brain. Your kids need help when they get home from school. Your baby or toddler requires your attention more often than not. You might have a job that exhausts your brain and tires your body. You might have volunteer positions or children’s activities in the evenings. Before you know it, there’s no time left to live like he deploys tomorrow. There’s barely enough time to wash your hair or find a moment of peace.
Signing up for life as a military spouse comes with more than the traditional highs and lows of marriage. We also dive headfirst into the highest calling of support, ensuring our families carry forward through training, relocations, deployments and other curveballs thrown our way. Navigating this journey fosters a myriad of essential skills, but they have a secondary application: the job market. As a military spouse, you can highlight your unique qualities as a candidate in comparison to civilian counterparts. You are none the wiser. You fell asleep a couple hours ago, the words, “I love you, too” barely out before dreamland summoned you.
The USO (United Service Organizations) has been dedicated to supporting service members and their families since 1941. While the USO has stood with military families since its inception, in 2016 it launched a worldwide initiative focusing on programs to strengthen and empower military spouses by connecting them to their social, professional, and community networks. Additionally, in recent years, the USO has bolstered its military family programming, offering a wide-range of options serving the entire military family.
In order to recognize a trend, it has to happen more than once. But how many times does it take to change a trend? I’m just now recognizing a trend that happens shortly after a PCS—the November Burn Out.
Typically, we PCS around summertime. We move into our new home, and our family slowly adjusts to new schedules, new routines, new norms. And I say “yes” to every opportunity to interact with new friends, in search of my next battle buddies.
