No matter how you celebrate the holidays, you undoubtedly think of it as a special time of year. There are so many festive activities that mark the season: Parties, home decorating, baking, watching classic holiday movies, taking time off from work and school to enjoy the company of friends, and big family gatherings with all the traditions that go with them. When our soldiers are away at war, relocated to a foreign country, or temporarily stationed away from their family, often the ones they want to hold onto are their loved ones.
This feeling is all too familiar with the Director of Marketing at Clean Origin, Brandon Cook. Having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he knows the feeling of counting down the days, weeks, and months to finally be reunited with those he holds closest. This is exactly why he knew he wanted to consistently honor those who serve when he teamed up with the founders of Clean Origin.
It’s probably happened to all of us.
There we were, minding our own business. We walk past a room, a piece of furniture or some other seemingly normal object in our home then it hits us in the face like a freight train: “What is that awful smell?!”
For me, in a house full of kids, dogs, and a husband with his endless mound of military gear, this happens more often than I’d like to admit. Oh, and don’t get me started on the trash can…
I can vividly remember those first feelings of excitement, confusion, panic, and overwhelming joy when I first found out I was pregnant. I was the wife of a junior enlisted service member who had just returned from his first deployment to Iraq, and this was exactly what we wanted after a year of chaos. Our future might be uncertain and our time in the military might be unclear, but our family path was carving itself out and we couldn’t be happier.
For some of you, this might be your first baby, your third, or maybe you are further along on your journey to gathering your family together. Maybe you’re doing this without your partner nearby, maybe your family is close or maybe they are hundreds of miles away. One thing is for certain: you don’t have to be alone. There are many resources available to support you, including when you’ve made the decision to breastfeed or pump for your baby.
My son Kieran, a medic in the Army, took his life on August 28, 2010, only months before he was due to deploy to Afghanistan. It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since his death. Or that this milestone anniversary is taking place during what can only be described as a year unlike any other.
Suicide is often called “the last taboo” and with good reason since it’s one of the few subjects that remain largely off-limits in our society. People know that suicide is a problem and that we need to be talking about it. And yet the very idea of someone taking his or her life leaves many of us feeling deeply uncomfortable. We don’t know what to say, much less what to do.
