You’ve arrived at your new duty station. You settle into the hotel room you booked weeks ago, and by settle in, I mean you unpacked your suitcases and totes.
You filled the fridge with the few groceries you just picked up and gave the meager remains of the travel snacks a designated shelf.
Here we are again, about to move and start a new chapter. At five and a half years, this has been the longest we have ever lived in one location.
As a new military spouse eons ago, I was fascinated with the traditions and customs of the Army. In particular, the events known as “Hail and Farewell” ceremonies, where everyone gathers either formally or informally to welcome or say goodbye to those in a fellow organization.

As I near the end of my time living in Germany while my wife serves in the United States Army, this is Part II of a three-part series, examining my thoughts and feelings as I prepare to head back to America and leave Germany behind. We travel a lot by car. In part, we travel by car because it’s expensive to fly and partly because Brandon doesn’t like to fly without a parachute. We’ve driven from Colorado to Arizona, Alabama, Florida and even to Canada. Traveling as a military family is a bit different from regular civilian journeys as we often move to unfamiliar areas and don’t return to a previous duty station. With PCS season upon the military, I decided to collect my tried-and-true travel essentials to share with prospective movers; I hope this helps!
