PCS

If you are PCSing this year, then you’ve come to the right place!

Here at Mission: Milspouse, we’ve faced our fair share of relocations, DITYs, government moves, overseas stints, and everything in between. We’ve been there and done that, and we have the stickers to prove it.

With all that experience, we know how stressful it can be. Packing and loading mean moving all of your belongings—special things, irreplaceable things—and none of us really want things broken or damaged. While we can’t ensure there won’t be casualties of PCS, we can help you prepare to make the move a little smoother.

Check out all of our blog post pertaining to all things PCS. Get ready for some practical tips AND insight into experiences of those who have been there, moved that.

PCS and Stress: A Personal Journey

PCS and Stress: A Personal Journey

It’s that wonderful time of year where we are told to move at the U.S. Army’s behest to a new area. As exciting as it is to move to a new area, it can also be overwhelming and scary. In my opinion, the most overwhelming part about PCSing is the packing!

Trying to stay organized during this time is stressful, especially when a toddler and pregnancy is added into the mix. The good news is that my family and I have a little more time to PCS than last time. The bad news is that we must do a DITY move.

4 Rental Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

4 Rental Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

With all the stress a PCS can bring, the silver lining of a military move is the opportunity to create a new home in your next rental, whether it’s a property on or off the installation. The excitement often starts from afar, while staring at online photos from the home advertisement and virtually planning furniture placement and accurate window covering sizes.

Unfortunately, even with the prep work, walking into a rental home can be overwhelming as you try to picture all of your personal belongings working within an unknown floorplan. There’s rarely a perfect fit! Ceilings are too high or too low, there isn’t enough lighting, or the flooring is dated. The peculiarities are endless. This is why so many rental home decorating mistakes are made. Let’s take a look at a few common ones and how you can avoid them to create the homiest space you can, whether in a rental or installation housing:

The Never-ending War

The Never-ending War

Every two or three years a battle happens for military families who are PCSing.

That battlefield is your home, and the casualties are not only your possessions, but your sense of calm, serenity, and sense of right and wrong.

I’m talking about moving.

Some battles are so epic, it spawns a Facebook group with thousands of members consisting of military families that have faced moving horror stories. They turn to this group not only for retribution solutions, but also to simply share their grief, anger, and bewilderment.

OCONUS PCS Pro Tips

OCONUS PCS Pro Tips

Now that I have moved into our house (albeit, without our HHG which are somewhere on a container ship in the Atlantic Ocean at this moment), I can breathe a nice, full breath knowing we successfully navigated an OCONUS PCS right smack-dab in the middle of COVID.

I’m not writing you today to tell you about a PCS during COVID, but rather, about a couple important and helpful tips we used to PCS from an OCONUS duty station, because that’s a whole new ball of wax with more opinions on the rules than those put forth by medical and political Facebook experts.

Here are six pro tips:

Is Living On or Off the Installation Better for Your Budget?

Is Living On or Off the Installation Better for Your Budget?

Budgeting (oof). This subject warrants an eye roll, but it’s unavoidable, and that’s why we’re talking about it. Your monthly budget determines the future of your finances, right? It’s important!

So, let’s talk about one of the major budgeting categories (spoiler alert)…housing. While military families often focus on the evergreen debate as to whether we should buy or rent a home, there’s another big decision to make when moving to a new duty station: whether or not to live on the installation.

The answer comes down to your location and your priorities.

How Nomads Build Community

How Nomads Build Community

We are nomads. Not livestock-moving nomads (unless of course you count children and pets), but nomads nonetheless.

Dictionary.com defines a nomad as “a member of a people or tribe that has no permanent abode but moves about from place to place.” Sound familiar?

We are certainly a tribe all our own. Regardless of service (Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard), we have common experiences with unique language and customs that seem strange at times to our civilian counterparts. With special customs only we understand, we’re like some unique culture in a world of normal.
