PCS

If you are PCSing this year, then you’ve come to the right place!

Here at Mission: Milspouse, we’ve faced our fair share of relocations, DITYs, government moves, overseas stints, and everything in between. We’ve been there and done that, and we have the stickers to prove it.

With all that experience, we know how stressful it can be. Packing and loading mean moving all of your belongings—special things, irreplaceable things—and none of us really want things broken or damaged. While we can’t ensure there won’t be casualties of PCS, we can help you prepare to make the move a little smoother.

Check out all of our blog post pertaining to all things PCS. Get ready for some practical tips AND insight into experiences of those who have been there, moved that.

Thinking About Living Overseas?

Thinking About Living Overseas?

Maybe you thought about living overseas before you had kids.

Maybe you thought about living overseas before you were married.

Maybe you thought about living overseas before you stopped dreaming.

What this piece is not about are those Facebook and Instagram posts you’ve seen from your friends stationed or living overseas where the entire family is standing in front of the Eiffel Tower or in the Neuschwanstein Castle upon which the Disney castle is modeled (see featured image). If living overseas was filled with those type of moments every second of every day, then who wouldn’t want to live overseas?

Moving Into a New Rental? Tackle These Important Tasks First

Moving Into a New Rental? Tackle These Important Tasks First

After the final box is unloaded and the last mover has shut the door, it’s time to take a quick breather and set your action plan into motion. The first things to do after moving into your rental home are a little bit different for everyone, but many of us focus on the most important tasks so we can begin calling our new rental house our home.

The trick is to uncover what your family prioritizes the most. Is it cleanliness, and removing every trace of the previous tenants? Or, do you prefer to focus on a few zones of sanctuary to nest in, happy to have somewhere to retreat to when you need a break?

Tips to Prepare You for an OCONUS PCS

Tips to Prepare You for an OCONUS PCS

Decisions, decisions!

Parents make decisions every day that impact their family. Some decisions are more complex than others, and for military families, some decisions are unique and different from what a civilian neighbor may face. For example, military families moving overseas face a tremendous amount of stress and anxiety leading up to and during an OCONUS move. And sometimes the return trip stateside can be equally tough.

One Step At A Time

One Step At A Time

My husband’s next assignment is taking us to Hawaii. The kids are super excited about it, especially my daughter. She cannot wait to swim with turtles, dolphins, and sharks—especially sharks.

People always tell me they are jealous and excited for us that we can move to Hawaii and live in paradise. I am careful about getting excited.

Being a military spouse for almost 18 years, I’ve learned that plans could change overnight, and they did for our family.

Lucky 13

Lucky 13

So, here we are… A freshly redeployed soldier, a graduated senior, and a spouse who finds herself reluctant to leave an amazing job and incredible neighbors. We sold the house and are about to embark on a shaky PCS across the country during the great Pandemic, and by the way, it’s move number 13.

Lucky 13…What could possibly go wrong?

As I try not to stress out over the logistics of this particular move, I decided to retrain my brain by reflecting on our past 12 moves and the lessons and blessings each one of those moves gave to us.

A Bug that Changed the South and Changed Me

A Bug that Changed the South and Changed Me

I remember dreading our move from Fort Benning, Georgia, to Fort Rucker, Alabama. Fort Benning had become a place of rich family time for us. We had just come off a 15-month long deployment while in Hawaii, and my husband had accepted an instructor job at Benning, which meant semi-normal hours and the big bonus of no deployments.

Music to my ears!

My children were toddler age and so were many of the other children in our particular housing loop on post. Evenings were filled with friends chatting, laughing, and watching children play on the shared patios. We did life together, and it was fabulous.

It was one of those duty stations where the community and friendships ran deep, and it all happened so naturally. So when our three years were up, and it was time for a PCS, I was digging in my heels. I did not want to leave, and I had serious doubts that any other place would be as amazing as the little world I had made for me and my family in South Georgia.
