As military families on the move, we focus a lot on personal wish lists when we’re looking to buy our next home. Since we move around a lot (like, a lot, a lot), we have the opportunity to try out a ton of different properties and discover all the things we want in a home and all the things we don’t. Then, if we decide to buy a home at our next duty station, we look for one that encompasses as many of the right things as possible.
Don’t be discouraged if an off-season PCS has you searching for a rental home over the winter months. Although not the traditional season to move, the cold weather offers unique opportunities and advantages not normally found during the spring and summer. Embrace the transition–you might just save time and money!
If the military determined your PCS destination early, take advantage of this gift and start learning everything there is to know about the next city. Or, more likely, if the orders were last minute or slow to come by, you’ve got to multi-task! Jump in and start the house hunt while simultaneously researching the next destination.
Are you selling your home this holiday season? You’re probably aware that spring and summer are known for being the best time to sell a home. But if you’re military with orders in hand, waiting a few extra months for the traditional moving season to roll in might not be a luxury you have. You might be surprised to note that there are several advantages to selling your home during the holidays!
Here are a few ways to prep your home for sale despite the snow:
Autumn has arrived in Kansas. After six years in the south, the magic of leaves changing and the smell of fall has me experiencing the beauty around me with fresh eyes. Amplifying the experience, even more, is watching my 3-year-old, Autumn (can you tell I love this season?), crunch and roll through piles of freshly fallen leaves.
This afternoon, Autumn (my daughter) pointed at the sky and yelled, “honk, honk!” Since last week’s early snow, Canadian geese have gotten the message…it’s time to migrate south. They have been flying over Fort Leavenworth to rest at Missouri River before continuing along their journey.
Standing outside on such a beautiful fall afternoon put me in a reflective mood. There is beauty in migration. The journey into the unknown with the hope of something better. The geese know it is their season to leave their comfortable summer homes. They fly together for thousands of miles to a place they hope will be safe until they can return.
Last week, I challenged my high school juniors to take Robert Frost’s most celebrated poem and write their own version. The assignment instructed them to write about being faced with a decision, something they were unsure of, but might change them in some way.
The only catch was that they had to follow the same rhyme scheme modeled in the poem, and they had to keep the last original line.
Consider your choice to rent a home a significant and definitive step in the PCS process. Here’s to one less problem to solve!
