I always say that it’s worth taking a shot on an OCONUS PCS. Living overseas in a new place can be exciting with plenty of things to see and do.
But it can also feel isolated, scary, and too new for comfort.
I spent three years overseas in Germany, living in a very small German village, so I feel I have a little bit of perspective on this. I didn’t live on post. I was in a set of six row homes, all of whom were Americans, but we were surrounded by Germans.
It. Was. Hard.

Not only will you probably love your time in Colorado, but you’ll do things you might never have done before, see things you’ve never seen before, and like many retirees before you, you might not want to leave.
We are currently transitioning at my parents’ home in Kentucky between PCS moves from Michigan to South Carolina. All six of us (husband, four boys, and I) packed what we needed for a four-week stint between moves as we await our household goods delivery the first week of July.
We have been here for almost three weeks to date and have had the luxury of spending time with family and neighbors since the day we drove up the long gravel driveway.
Summer time is upon us. It’s the season of BBQ, pools, beaches, and carefree sunny days.
Or a season of chucking all of your earthly possessions into a truck hopefully headed for a new duty station, repeatedly throwing your kids some chicken nuggets in the back row for the 32-hour drive, and reminding yourself that you won’t get any of your husband’s SGLI if you murder him for stopping for the 500,000th time for a pee break.
This is also known as PCS season.
A PCS is hard enough, don’t you think? Then, when you add young kids into the mix, you’ve entered a whole other level of complicated. But what about their PCS travel experience? How do you prepare for that?
