With all that experience, we know how stressful it can be. Packing and loading mean moving all of your belongings—special things, irreplaceable things—and none of us really want things broken or damaged. While we can’t ensure there won’t be casualties of PCS, we can help you prepare to make the move a little smoother.

Being a single parent has its challenges, but when you are also a service member in the midst of PCSing, the challenges are compounded. Frequent moves can be tiresome, and one way to make PCSing more fun is to find the adventure in the moment.
Here are six tips to help ease the stress of relocating to a new duty station.
As this post is going live, my husband and I will be getting ready to pack up our PODS trailer and head off on our first big PCS journey (and by big, I mean 400 miles, so really, not so big, but big enough to require some prep). We’re making things a little more entertaining for ourselves by choosing to do a partial PPM (Personally Procured Move), since we’re apparently gluttons for punishment and enjoy lugging boxes every year or so. What that means is we’ll be driving the distance from Long Island up to his family in the Adirondacks to visit, then traversing the state of New York to get to Fort Drum.
By the time this posts, I will be sunbathing in Hawaii. My family and I will have just PCS’d from Seoul, South Korea, after three very long years. I try very hard to see the bright side of things, so amid my complaining, I started to think of what I would miss about Korea.
For more military families, a PCS brings a lot of change. For me, it was the start of married life with my service member. I left a familiar and comfortable home in New York City to embark on an amazing journey. Traveling was the fun part. Once the dust settled and we got all the moving boxes inside our first apartment, however, we had our work cut out for us.
And now I’ll be singing songs from The Sound of Music all day long. There are worse things, I suppose.
But this post is not about awesome musicals—it’s about the top five things I like best about Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, right outside of Anchorage, Alaska.
Moving all the time must be so hard, they say.
It has to be challenging to live in a new place every few years, they say.
Yet, when I stand in the middle of our new home and look around at the empty space, empty walls, and empty cupboards…
I don’t see the challenges.
