If we know one thing about the military, we know it is rooted in decades (and in some cases, centuries!) of tradition. From receiving line etiquette to hosting a battalion coffee, here’s your guide to get it right.
Army spouses are a special breed. We have endured since the beginning of our Army and served our nation, the military, and families well. Today, many units and Army balls celebrate with the tradition of a grog ceremony as they herald their history. We thought it appropriate to create a “punch bowl/grog ceremony” to celebrate the course of our spouse history.
To keep traditions and customs alive, it is customary to share, either by personal example or through written or verbal means. But because of COVID, the normal battle rhythm is anything but normal, so the AWN Protocol and Etiquette Team thought we’d share a fun “throwback” topic! You may have read our blog entitled “Dress for the Occasion.” One word you didn’t find there was “gloves.”
No matter how long you’ve been around the military, you may occasionally come across situations you don’t know how to navigate, especially in the protocol and etiquette department. We hope that you’re ready to get back to entertaining and gathering with friends! That’s a large part of what makes life with the military fun and friendly! But, maybe there are some of you who never were at ease hosting parties and events in the past and are now starting to be concerned with the thought of the how-tos in hosting in the near future. These tips and ideas have worked for us and others, and we hope they will give you the confidence to perhaps host a unit coffee or backyard barbecue and find the joy in entertaining.

Army units are getting back to holding wonderful functions known as military balls and formals, and you’ll be invited! Now, if you aren’t really familiar with these elegant soirees, there are a few simple suggestions that will help you feel more comfortable.
