The Redshirts Are Coming!

The Redshirts Are Coming!

Dear Mr. Dad: My wife and I are thinking about keeping our five-year-old son out of kindergarten until he turns six. We have friends who’ve done the same thing and they say that it gave children a lot of advantages. But is it really a good idea?

5 Things to Know About Military Kids

5 Things to Know About Military Kids

The military child, or military brat as some call them, are a special breed of kid. They learn things and sacrifice more in life than most kids their age. With April being the Month of the Military Child, many military installations and organizations are taking time to honor and celebrate these special children.

7 Ways to Prep for the Holidays

7 Ways to Prep for the Holidays

While Halloween is not my favorite holiday of the year, it is one that I always look forward to, as it marks the start of the holiday season. I know that Christmas decor has been up and for sale in the stores for well over a month now, but to me, it is not really the holiday season until Halloween. Thanksgiving is a little more than three weeks away, and Christmas will soon follow.

Holiday Thoughts Already?

Holiday Thoughts Already?

This past week, we reached the six-month mark of this deployment. We’re halfway to the finish! Halfway to Daddy being home. Halfway to feeling his arms wrapped around me again. Halfway to not solo-parenting anymore!

We’ve reached six months with only a few bumps along the way, and I’m incredibly impressed and amazed that we are actually here.

Celebrating Veterans Day with Children

Celebrating Veterans Day with Children

Veterans Day is Nov. 11, and it’s much more than a four-day weekend!

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov. 11, 1918. In 1954, though, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.”

Summer Camp: Military Style

Summer Camp: Military Style

The summer sun is bearing down, and we are definitely feeling the heat! At the Crooks house, summer is full of front yard play, complete with sprinklers and snow cones. This summer, though, as I looked across my front lawn, I saw the most peculiar sight: Through the drops of water and sticky syrup, all of the neighborhood children were playing “Army.” It made me laugh (in the civilian world, no one would have understood their madness), and then I was inspired to find more ways to encourage their creative play.

Field Problem: And Baby Makes Two (or Three)

Dear, Field Problems:

I’m in a little bit of a different situation recently. I am the proud father of a new baby boy. His mother and I are not together. This is my first, and I’ve never had to address the meshing of my military career with family matters. What can you tell me that may stop my feeling that I’m going to compound my mistakes?
