5 Tips for Being a Savvier Shopper

We’ve talked about why to budget and tips on creating a budget, but what about the practical application of spending that money? Shopping is part of our daily lives, and as most of us have experienced, it can sometimes be a “dangerous” activity—if we don’t have a plan.

Fortunately, there are some ways to be a savvy shopper without being a tightwad:

1. Make a list

This is especially important when grocery shopping. Stores and products are designed to make shoppers feel the need to buy. There’s a lot of temptation in all those grocery store aisles, so make a plan ahead of time. If you know your store well, consider organizing your list by section.

2. Collect coupons

And keep them current. Clipping coupons doesn’t have to be (and shouldn’t be) extreme. It takes about 15 minutes to go through the coupons from the Sunday paper, which isn’t bad for the savings you can find! Or, turn coupon clipping into an assignment or game for your kids.

3. Become a “reward card” member

The most bang for your buck will come from your most-frequented stores. This is usually free and gets you sale prices for reward card holders only. These sales can also be combined with coupons. (Check your individual stores for rules and regulations.)

4. Download shopping apps

You’ll receive more access to digital coupons and ciruclars! This is especially helpful if you are more digitally-based. Some top apps are Coupons.com, Yowza, and store-based apps, like Cartwheel (for Target). There is even a coupon app for the commissary.

5. Use cash envelopes

Cash transactions may be less common these days, but designating certain amounts to your spending categories helps to curb overspending. Using cash is more emotional than swiping a card, and it’s helpful to physically see how much you have left!
