On this episode, our featured guest is Vicki Cody, author of Army Wife: A Story of Love and Family in the Heart of the Army. Full of humor and honesty, Army Wife brings us into Vicki’s private life in a very personal way and opens the lens for a broader view of world events, relatable to anyone with a family member in the military. Vicki grew up in Burlington, Vermont, and graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1975. For the next 33 years she was an Army spouse, supporting her service member in his career. While raising their two sons and moving all over the United States and overseas, she served as a coach and mentor for other Army spouses and as an advocate for Army families. Her first book, Your Soldier, Your Army: A Parents’ Guide was published by the Association of the United States Army in 2005. Her articles have appeared in numerous military magazines and publications. She and her husband of 40 years now live in the Washington, D.C. area.

What’s hot this week in military related news? Eagle Scouts, Scouting professionals, and volunteers celebrated 92-year-old John Price with an Eagle Scout court of honor 75 years after he earned Scouting’s highest honor. Price achieved the rank in 1941, just as the world was erupting in war. His Scoutmaster, John Mehltretter, came to Price’s home, congratulated him, and handed him his Eagle Scout Award. But there wasn’t time to schedule a court of honor to celebrate Price’s achievement. Five days later, the 17-year-old joined the Navy. Price served on a submarine in the South Pacific during World War II, and he went on to serve his country for 20 years and five months, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer.
He never thought much about missing out on an Eagle Scout court of honor, but he did hold one thing dear: his Eagle pin. So, after discovering that it was missing, he reached out to a Baltimore Area Council representative to see if he might get a replacement. The contact, Ann Klohr, was happy to help. She listened to Price’s story and was surprised to hear that he’d never had a court of honor. She turned to district professionals for help. In June, the district asked Price to attend a roundtable, at which they thanked him for his service and surprised him with a long-overdue court of honor attended by other Eagles, Scouting professionals, and volunteers.

Jene writes “Currently, three states hold the loved ones of my blended family. My husband is soon to return to Washington from his 8-week TDY, but while he’s been gone, I’ve had time to reflect, analyze, and ponder how different being a military spouse and step-mother is. When my husband is present, he’s the string that draws a line between my step-children and me. Without that connection the silence has grown. I strive to make my presence known with phone calls sprinkled in here or there when I happen to catch my step-children with my in-laws. I handwrite notes to them when I mail gifts. I send post cards and sandwich bags full of Box Tops for school. I want them to know that I care. With or without their dad present, I am a steady and stable person to rely on.”

The Spouse and Caregiver Scholarship Program identifies, recognizes, and rewards post-9/11 spouses and caregivers for their strength, fidelity, and resolve despite adversity. Scholarships aid in continued education at a reputable, accredited university, college, or trade school for spouses/caregivers as they assume critical roles in the financial well-being of their families.
The scholarships are:
- The Honorary Scholarship: Awarded to those seeking graduate or post-graduate degrees.
- The New Beginnings Scholarship: Awarded to those pursuing entry level classes or training.
- The Restoring Family Scholarship: Awarded to Spouses of the Fallen
- The Restoring Hope Scholarship: Awarded to an MSW Student
- The Restoring Self Scholarship: Awarded to those seeking any undergraduate degree.
Caregiver and military spouse scholarships are made payable to the scholarship recipient’s institution for payment of tuition, books, and supplies. The scholarship is for U.S. colleges and universities only.
The application process for the spring 2017 scholarships is open until Oct. 31, 2016.
