When my husband got the notice that his AFSC was going to be transferred from the Air Force to the Space Force, we obviously had a lot of questions, and since he was one of the first to make the transfer in 2020, we didn’t know of anyone else in our circle also making the change.
While the branch itself is still new and growing, here are three major changes we experienced, and I hope this makes your family’s transition as smooth as possible.
1. Yes, they do need their uniform updated.
This was probably the easiest step, but an important one. While the Space Force still wear the same uniform, their name tapes must be changed to the blue thread color, and of course, updated to say, “U.S. Space Force.”
2. There is a ceremony for swearing in and out.
If your spouse was previously part of another branch, they will have to do another swearing in to the Space Force. In my husband’s case, it looked like a promotion or reenlistment ceremony and consisted of redoing the oath and then as a fun touch, immediately swapping his uniform jacket from Air Force to Space Force.
It is a unique ceremony!
3. The options for PCSing are more limited than the other branches.
With the branch still being quite young, there aren’t a lot of bases you can be assigned to. The good news about this is it makes “homesteading” much more likely and can give you some relief in knowing that there are only a handful of places you can end up.
In our case, Space Force is making it easy to stay where we are and enjoy some stability.
Welcome to The Space Force!
There are still many changes Space Force families are going to see in the upcoming years, but it comes with a small community to help you navigate it.
Our generation hasn’t seen a new military branch be developed and stood up, and to watch military history be created in real-time is a unique adventure.
Every family is going to have a different experience with how their entry into the Space Force looks, so make sure to not get too caught up in comparing journeys.
