Tacos, Nuts, and Food for Thought

Most days, I arrive at my job rushed and frantic in spite of my best efforts to get up on the first alarm and my best intentions to not check my email before I even roll out of bed.

I am a work in progress on both accounts.

But when I enter my classroom every morning, my eyes automatically connect with three posters that I have strategically placed to inspire my students when they walk in the room. My students need to see the words on the three posters. They have faced much adversity in their young lives, and sometimes they just need some encouragement.

525,600 Minutes: A Season of Deployment

How do we measure a year? A good question, and one that is front and center on my brain tonight.

It is Deployment Eve…

…one of the hardest nights for military families.

I can’t sleep.

The house is littered with duffle bags, packing lists, and emotional land mines as we face the 525,600 minutes that lie ahead.

It is assuredly not our first year apart, and as much as I would like to say that I have lost count, it would be a lie.

The Myth of Fort Marshall

Last month, my mom called me and asked if we could ever be stationed at Fort Marshall. I thought for a minute and told her that there wasn’t a Fort Marshall in the Army and maybe she was confused with an Air Force base.

But I was wrong. Fort Marshall does exist…on the Lifetime television network. She was referring to the fictional base on the 2007 TV show Army Wives.

Reinventing Rosie

During WW II, thousands of women answered their nation’s call to turn off their ovens and fire up their riveters as they joined the manufacturing workforce. Between 1942 and 1948, the “Rosies” inspired the world with their rallying cry, “We can do it”.

Whether or not Rosie secretly preferred producing rivets to roast beef may be the greatest mystery of all time.

A Shoutout to Milspouses

Not to BRAGG, but our Army spouses are resourceful and resilient.

Like LEWIS and Clark, their spirit of adventure takes them to the far reaches of the world.

Ultimate List of Military Kid Resources

Ultimate List of Military Kid Resources

One of the hardest areas to navigate in our rapidly changing lifestyle is how to help our children “brat like a boss.” But, all you need it a great list of Military Kid resources to help guide you.

According to the Military Child and Education Coalition, most military children attend six to nine different schools from kindergarten to 12th grade, and (on average) a military student transfers more than twice during high school. This can put tremendous pressure on parents who try to make the transition as smooth as possible.
