AWTR Show #708: Vets Don’t Forget Vets

William Shuttleworth is a 72-year-old retired educator and Air Force veteran living in Massachusetts. He left his home on May 15, 2019, to walk across America in an effort to raise awareness for American veterans via the campaign Vets Don’t Forget Vets. He arrived in San Diego on Sept. 1, 2019, completing the trek of 3,300 miles in 115 days. During his journey, he focused on sharing information about veteran suicide, homelessness, health care, policies, and set out to raise $100,000 for Disabled American Veterans.

This Veterans Day, Thank a Milspouse

A family’s love is the best medicine. That is what my great-uncle Zachary always believed and it’s a phrase I hold near and dear to my heart. Zach Fisher and his wife, Elizabeth, created Fisher House Foundation when they saw the need for our heroes to have family nearby while undergoing medical treatments at VA hospitals and military installations far from home.

AWTR Show #707: Career & Technical Education to Military Pathways

Kayla Taylor is a 12-year Family and Consumer Sciences teacher in Kansas. She has a passion for helping parents and students understand what Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses are and how they are evolving to meet the needs of today’s society. A conversation with a student helped Mrs. Taylor delve into exploring how Career and Technical Education courses at the high school level can help students wishing to enter the military. This led Mrs. Taylor to investigate how high school students in military families can receive training in programs that often take multiple years when those families are often times moving. Tune in to hear more about her findings and gather information to equip your student by taking CTE courses in high school on a potential path to joining the military.

Auto Insurance Empowerment

Exciting. Unpredictable. Challenging. Rewarding.

Ah, yes. The life of a milspouse. This lifestyle easily encompasses the above list of words…and then some.

Another word I would add to describe the military spouse life is “educational.” In my ten plus years of loving my infantryman, I have learned a lot, like how to always write important dates or “plans” in pencil. And to never forget to check his uniform pockets for those sneaky ink pens before starting a load of laundry. Oh, and I’ve learned the power of “ish” when it comes to sharing any kind of time hacks about, well, anything.

AWTR Show #706: Back Roads to Belonging

In a world of increasing technology, we seem to be more connected than any other generation. Then, why do we feel so lonely as if we are on the outside looking in? Some women have a continual fear that they are missing out on something. In her book, Back Roads to Belonging: Unexpected Paths to Finding Your Place and Your People, Kristen Strong, outlines a road map to find a place of belonging. Strong provides encouragement and practical tools how to look in the right places for a place we fit. But, she warns, the road there may not be what you expected.

AWTR Show #705: Burn Victim and Overcomer: Zachary Sutterfield

Zachary Sutterfield grew up in a strong military household as both of his parents were service members. He planned to attend college to become a teacher…but then the unthinkable happened. Zach transferred to Texas State University and within 10 days, his apartment complex was purposefully set afire.

Five individuals lost their lives in the fire (two of whom were Zach’s roommates), and Zach himself sustained life-threatening injuries, including burns to more than 69% of his body and a traumatic brain injury. Although he was only given a 20% chance to live, he overcame all odds. More than a year later, Zach continues to recover and share his story.
