October is traditionally a month where people turn their attention to frightening stories or horrifying images as they anticipate Halloween. While goblins and ghouls parade around town, it’s important to take a look at one of the real horrors plaguing our sons and daughters. No, it isn’t make believe tales of witch doctors or vampires, it’s the prevalence of bullying (and cyberbullying) among our youth, which has led to the designation of October as National Bullying Prevention Month.
I’m currently pursuing my master’s in social work and had the privilege of doing a field placement with a local domestic violence agency working with domestic violence offenders. It was an eye-opening experience, to be certain, but also a very rewarding one. Now, I’m at a different agency with a different purpose (an emergency shelter for children), but the domestic violence cases still roll in. It’s heartbreaking work and full of as many tragic endings as happy ones, but I’m grateful to be doing it.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (just in case you didn’t know), and there are pink ribbons everywhere.
For those that don’t know me, I am a two-time breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed the first time at 32 in 2010. Then, just a few weeks before my husband returned home from his third deployment in 2014, the cancer returned.
Nothing says “Welcome home, Babe,” quite like the words “The cancer is back.”
As AWN’s resident book nerd, I’m back to suggest five books for you to read to get into the Halloween spirit! The leaves are beginning to turn, days are getting shorter, and Halloween draws ever closer, so come sit around the fire and find a great book based on your favorite type of scary story.
In this post-PCS season, I think it’s worth mentioning that every assignment every place you live, comes with bad things. In fact, I’m sure most of us could list off half a dozen things, without even thinking about it, that we don’t like about where we are currently stationed.
