AWTR Show 582: Where the Water Meets the Sand

October 3, 2016

Show Title:  Where the Water Meets the Sand

Show Date:  Oct. 3, 2016

Show Number:  #582

Dr. Tyra Manning shares about her book Where the Water Meets the Sand, a story of one military wife’s triumph over mental illness, addiction, and loss. Tyra’s husband was killed during the Vietnam War while on a top-secret mission near the Laotian jungle. She learned of his death while she was hospitalized at the Menninger Clinic, where she was being treated for depression, just two weeks before their daughter’s 2nd birthday. Dr. Manning persevered through her depression and addiction, ultimately earning a doctorate in education from the University of Kansas and becoming one of the nation’s top school superintendents. She has devoted her 40-year career to helping children achieve their highest potential. Since retiring in 2004, Dr. Manning’s mission has been to share her personal journey of hope with people who are experiencing depression, addiction, and loss.

You can connect with Dr. Manning on her website, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Military Caregiver News You Can Use

Have you heard how Tom Hanks recently joined the “Hidden Heroes” campaign? Created by The Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Hidden Heroes is a network that supports and meets the needs of many military caregivers. Army Spouse Jessica Allen joined Tom Hanks during the announcement of the campaign. She said, “As an infantry [spouse], you prepare for one of two options: they come home safe, or they come home in a box. The Army does not prepare you for the in-between, and the in-between never ends. Every single day I have to think about what my day is going to look like and pray that my husband doesn’t further injure himself.”

Tom Hanks is now serving as a campaign chair. He said, “I’ve covered some of this turf in my fake life as an actor who puts on other people’s clothes, and the emotional impact of a number of those jobs, it’s never left. It comes down to a chance to serve and I think help out in a very pragmatic and understandable way.” As part of Hidden Heroes, 50 cities nationwide have also given their commitment to become caregiver-friendly to military families by creating a committee of public and private organizations to address their unmet needs. AWN Social Media Roundup

As the days grow shorter and the mornings become cooler, many are already planning their next summer vacation. One of our most recently engaging photos on the AWN Facebook page is an image of flip flops, a beach towel, and an opened coconut with text that reads: “You might be a milspouse if you plan vacations around the military’s ‘schedule.’” Isn’t that the truth! It can often be difficult to make plans, whether holiday travels or summer vacations, around military training schedules. We’ve found that the best way to make plans is to be informed with my service member’s work schedule and any training that’s been scheduled for the unit in the future.
