Due to a serious lack of self-control around cute, furry things, my husband and I have managed to accumulate three dogs and a cat over the past several years. That’s right, three dogs—and they aren’t three Chihuahuas either. We added one at each duty station. Chris and I each brought one dog into our marriage, and we moved with two dogs from Fort Hood to Fort Benning. Then, we added a third dog at Benning, and the five of us (including my husband and I) PCS’d to Fort Bragg.

Staycations Around Your Duty Station
Military and civilian families from coast to coast have either gone or are preparing for their much anticipated (and often much needed!) summer vacations. Most of the time, we spend months planning for our trips, especially if they’re far away. But, sometimes, a vacation to a distant land isn’t viable. Summertime is also the time of the year that boasts the most expensive rates for flights and vacation packages. My husband and I try to plan on big vacations during the off-season, just to save some bucks in our big trips. Staycations are in the cards for many this year.
3 Ways to Keep Your Parenting Cool
Has this heat melted us all away? I feel fried and refried. Body and soul. I can’t be the only one. And, I’m a stay-at-home parent; I don’t want to even begin thinking about bosses, commutes, and demanding deadlines all in the proper (un-summer friendly) work attire. Popsicles and flip-flops have become more my style.
But yet, even with this laissez faire lifestyle, I’m struggling a little bit with the overloaded kitchen sink, sticky fingers, and the constant clutter and chatter that goes with summer-at-home kids. So, I’ve spent a few minutes brainstorming some ideas that should help me, and hopefully you, through the rest of these sizzling summer days.
5 Tips for Better Discussions
A couple of weeks ago my bride and I had a “discussion.” The project I had been planning was due, and I was running around at the last minute trying to gather all the things I needed. It went something like this:
Less is More: Discovering Decluttering
I don’t know about you, but every time we move I find myself with a problem.
About halfway through unpacking the endless boxes, I find I’m perfectly happy with how the house looks. Closets have clothes, but aren’t overflowing, shelves have stuff but aren’t packed to the brim, cupboards have items but with plenty of space. At this point, I’m done. And not just done because moving and unpacking is hard work, but done in the broader sense.
3 Tips to Prep for an Overseas PCS
In the spring of 2009, my husband called me from Iraq and asked what I thought about an overseas PCS—to Korea. He explained that they had just opened command sponsorship to families, so our family would be able to go for two years, maybe longer. He had already served two tours in Korea, one before we were married and one when our girls were very small. There had been no command sponsorship then, but he loved it.
I immediately said yes.
