Although tax season is often the most dreaded time of year, many consumers actually look forward to getting what’s owed to them, particularly since in recent years the average federal income tax refund has been in the $3,000 range.

Have You Done Your (Interview) Homework?
hose of you who have read my book know that one of the central themes is the impact that knowledge has on the success or failure of an interview: knowledge of self, knowledge of the position, and knowledge of the company.
Today’s column focuses on the third of the three: you must research a company before an interview.
Families Unite!
April is the Month of the Military Child and that makes me happy!
During the past 12 years of helping military families stay connected and close, I’ve come to meet and cherish many military children. We’ve worked and played together, and I swear, their laughter is louder and their eyes are more “sparkly,” probably because they come from a proud culture.
But, I also know that their tears come from unknown places down deep.
Discovering Monterey, California
Monterey delighted us. This town of 29,000 people has the attractions and shopping of a city of 200,000. I came as a teenager with my family over 20 years ago and have always wanted to share the aquarium with my children. This visit we lounged at the Lover’s Point Inn (10% off with military ID http://www.loverspointinnpg.com/) with great rooms a two-minute walk from the beach – try the Mermaid Beach House if you want something extra special and have the space of a home.
An Imperfect Marriage
There are no perfect marriages out there. You may think that your friends have the perfect marriage, but guess what?
You’re wrong.
They still have conflict, but they figured out how to deal with it in a way that doesn’t tear the marriage or relationship apart.
Conflict is going to happen in everybody’s marriage at some point. The important question is, how do you resolve it? People typically deal with conflict in one of five ways.
How Friends Impact Your Life and Health
I’m an introvert by nature and was a very shy kid. The moves of military life forced me to learn how to connect and make friends. Believe me, I really had to learn how to do that—it didn’t come naturally.
I read books to learn. Books are my go-to answer for everything. I interviewed many military spouses to share what worked for them. When we ask any military spouse who has been through a deployment or other challenge of military life, “What helped you get through that time?” we always hear, “My friends, my battle buddies.” Spouses who have the hardest time with military life are those isolated by circumstances or who choose to isolate themselves. Research shows isolation can lead to depression. Plus it’s a dream-killer.
