With school no longer in session, long days by the pool, backyard BBQs, and family vacations in sight, many of us often think that summer is free from “seasonal blues.” But sometimes, adjusting to the “new normal” during these months can be difficult. Commissary Savings May Not Be Accurate – The Military Officers Association of America reported that “the Defense Commissary Agency used unreliable and inconsistent methodologies to calculate the annual savings realized by commissary shoppers, resulting in inflated savings figures.” DoD Reveals New Website for MWR Libraries – The Department of Defense MWR program has launched a brand new library website! NASA Reveals Spectacular Images from Webb Telescope – One of my favorite images is nicknamed “Cosmic Cliffs” because it looks like an brownish-orange mountain range at night, with a deep blue sky and sparkling stars. But a closer read explains that baby stars are being formed. This Week in History – Since we’re talking NASA, a throw back to July 20, 1969 to the first moon landing! Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon.

Ukraine is Holding Defensive Position Against Russia – U.S. Officials announced that “The Russians are making ‘slow and uneven advances’ through northern Ukraine.” Air Force Slowing NCO Promotions – The Air Force announced that it will be promoting fewer NCOs over the next two years to “help resolve its recent workforce challenges, such as rebuilding institutional knowledge in a young and understaffed maintenance corps,” reported Air Force Times. Army Drops High School Diploma and GED Requirement – The Army has temporarily dropped its high school diploma or GED requirements to address an “escalating recruiting crisis hitting the entire Defense Department,” reported Military.com.
Self-care has become a fashionable buzzword in our culture. Still, as Dr. Sharita Knobloch points out, self-care deserves a key place in the life of every homeschooling military spouse.
After you PCS, do you ever arrive at a new location and feel completely lost? In my time as a military spouse, this feeling was further exacerbated during our OCONUS tours. When we moved to Japan, my twins were three, my spouse was immediately gone off on deployment, where he remained for most of the tour. I couldn’t figure out the language, let alone the basics of this new life we had been thrown into a million miles from the comforts of home.
