Health & Fitness

Even under the best of circumstances, striking a balance between “real life” and focusing on health and fitness is no easy task. Fold in military spouse life, and it kicks that challenge up a notch!

This category will give you insight from a milspouse perspective, including workouts, celebrating victories (large and small), and how to put your health as a priority, no matter what milspouse life throws your way.

PS: Don’t skip leg day.

Being Scared is OK

Being Scared is OK

“Mom, if a hawk came swooping down and tried to grab me, would you be able to save me?” a little boy, about 6, asked his mother.

“Oh, I would take a stick and whack him,” she said.

“But, what if an eagle came. He is much bigger and probably stronger than you. What would you do?” he persisted.  It was a warm spring day and I was 10 feet behind them.

“Honey, I would throw a rock and beat him off with my fists,” mom continued.

“So, if a bear jumped out right now, I would be dead, wouldn’t I?” he said, with increasing anxiety.

“I can only say I would do everything I could to protect you,” she said.

The world is terribly scary to a little one, especially with the scourge of the COVID-19.

It’s time to be real with yourself and ask the question, do you care about health and fitness? If you don’t, you can stop here. If you do, continue to read.

An overriding obstacle for many people is not having the confidence in themselves to succeed. You don’t need to be judged by anyone, and you don’t need their approval. Your choice for your fitness program is personal and what makes you feel good and happy.

Tuning Your Radio: Part 2

Let’s be real—if something has to be done, what is the point of letting it cause us anxiety? That won’t make the task any more enjoyable or help us be complete it any faster.

And if I am lucky enough to read a chapter or two of my personal development book before my family wakes up, I squeeze that in too.

Starting my day off right is only the beginning.

Tuning Your Radio: Part 1

Every month, without fail, I struggle to think of what I should write about.

What kind of profound piece of enlightenment can I possibly share with AWN readers?

My personal Jiminy Cricket strikes again, offering a moment of clarity (usually, right after a moment of absolute chaos). Lately, I have noticed many of my decisions and reactions are hugely impacted by what kind of environment I am surrounding myself with, as well as the useful or harmful voice in my head. What shows am I watching? What books am I reading? What music am I rocking out to?

And most importantly, what people am I allowing to infiltrate my tiny spot in the universe? Each answer can have a precise impact on how my mood, mindset for decisions, and general outlook on life.

The Journey to Discovering Your Why

This time of the year is notorious for finding something in your life that you want to remove, increase, or alter from the previous year into the new year.

I have gone through many New Year’s resolutions in my lifetime. Becoming debt-free is always near the top of my list—each year I am able to decrease it, but never fully cross the finish line. Other times I am able to truly commit to changing my behaviors for a better wiser self.

Why do some of the commitments that we make never survive into February, while others become a lifestyle change? Finding the why inside, that core motivation to make the desired change.
