While there are a lot of great things about being a part of a military community, it also has its downsides. Frequent separations from those we love due to field time, TDY, or deployments; moving every two or three years to another state or another country; infrequent visits with family, maybe only once a year; changing schools, addresses, telephone numbers, licenses, cars.
Sometimes, it can feel like military life has a lot of darkness.
But when you see the light, something amazing happens.
To each their own, but my family and I have always preferred the small town atmosphere as opposed to the busy, chaotic city life when it comes to duty stations.
Every small town you get assigned to, you will find those people. The ones that make you question every desire you had to PCS to this quaint little town you heard so much about.
My heart skipped a beat as the familiar Skype ringtone filled the room. When my husband’s pixelated, but undeniably handsome face came into view, tears filled my eyes. I wasn’t sure this milestone moment was going to happen.
My husband shipped out on a year-long deployment shortly before our son’s first birthday. Since duty also called him to miss his birth, I wanted to plan something extra special that could somehow bring us all together to celebrate that day, despite the thousands of miles between us.
If there was a dating app for finding new friends at each new duty station, my profile might read something like this:
Hi, my name is Grace, and I’m seeking new friends! I moved here a few weeks ago, and now that I’m settled into my house, I have to get out or I’ll go stir crazy!
I woke up early one morning, mid-July, to send my husband off to yet another training exercise in a different European country. I climbed back into bed and opened my social media feeds where the first thing I saw at the top of my Facebook homepage was this photo about military spouses:
Have you ever had one of those “I wish I was that lucky” moments? Maybe you saw on Facebook that your friend’s mother-in-law took her four kids for a three-day weekend. Maybe you heard that your neighbors received military orders to your dream duty station. Maybe your co-worker got the promotion that you had your eye on.
When faced with these bummer moments, if you’re like me, you might say, “Geez. I wish I was that lucky.”
