Like 99.9% of military families, we live far (very far, in fact) away from our extended family.
When we got orders last summer, my mom even remarked, “I feel like you’re moving half a world away.” Truthfully, it does feel like that, especially during the summer. In the summer, our schedules aren’t as busy, our days are less rigid, and it’s then that I find myself wishing we lived closer to family. Well, then and those two days in March when I’m throwing two birthday parties back to back.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie Tommy Boy is when Tommy is coming back to his hometown after graduating from college. His buddy, Richard, is picking him up at the airport and gives Tommy a little grief about how long it took Tommy to get his degree. Tommy says, “You know, a lot of people go to college for seven years.” Richard replies, “Yeah, they’re called doctors.”
The day I purchased my wedding dress, I was alone.
My husband had dropped me off at a local bridal shop, I marched to the section with my size, spent several minutes perusing the selection, chose two dresses, tried each on, and strolled out of the store 30 minutes later.
I did not have my bridesmaids, mother, or mother-in-law with me (although they had previously attended dress scouting trips).
We live in a world where slogans and mottos rule the roost. It is the way that companies, politicians, and organizations create their brand and subsequently promote it.

At some point in school, most students hear of Newton’s Laws of Motion. The third law is the most familiar: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
In my opinion, this law can also be applied to some of the emotions that take place within military life.
