We’ve been at our new duty station for a little more than a month now, and making new friends has been hard.
I think one of the most difficult things about moving is meeting new people. I used to think I was pretty outgoing, but now that I’m getting older, I realize that I’m actually the opposite.
It’s important for military families to be educated about the amazing military resources available to us. Those of you who have been hanging around the blog for a while know that my husband has been on recruiting duty for the past seven years.
It was about 2:30 p.m. on the 5th of November in 2009. I worked at a school in Killeen just outside the main gates of Fort Hood. A parent walked into our classroom to pick up her child. I was the teacher’s aide in the classroom. The parent walked up to the teacher and said, “There’s been a shooting on post.”
Losing a loved one is a painful event, but the pain doesn’t stop after the funeral. The pain continues, and as loved ones we try to keep the memory and spirit of the lost love one alive.
Whining is not advocacy.
“Liking” a Facebook post does not make us activists. Even if we are passionate. Especially if we are misguided.
Strengthening a community takes more than spouting half truths or three-year-old stories and statistics. It takes savvy. It takes grace. It takes accuracy and open mindedness.
Bottom line? Advocacy takes work.
Real work.
