Planning is a beautiful thing. I learned this many years ago.
It makes life less stressful, brings joy and organization, and equips us to be on our “A” game. Then, I married into the military, where plans typically seem “tentative” at best and some days last a max of 33 seconds before they change again.
The traditional reference to military children as “brats” has always bothered me, way before becoming a military spouse. I remember feeling uneasy when I heard the new kids at school being called “brats.” Being called a brat wasn’t the nicest of things to call people, especially from a kid’s perspective. So, to help explain this “brat” reference in the military subculture, I sat down and took the time to research what this term of endearment actually meant.
Being a military spouse can be pretty tough at times. You’re sometimes far from where you call home and surrounded by different people every few years. Things can get tough, and sometimes, it’s hard to keep an optimistic perspective on everything. My daughter is 2, and she has opened me up to seeing things differently than I did prior to having her in my life. I love seeing the world through her eyes. I’ve realized there’s a lot to learn about life from a 2-year-old. I know that sounds a little off, but it’s true.
On our journey of military life we tend to only think of our friends as our battle buddies. Truth is, there are many types of battle buddies. From your friends, neighbors, spouse, even unit members, all the way down to your pets. One battle buddy pairing that is often left unrecognized is the one of you and your child. You are your child’s biggest cheerleader, their rock, and their example. How you handle this military life and the energy you put into their success on the journey is imperative to their well-being.
Many of you may have tuned in for the documentary special by National Geographic, Inside Combat Rescue: The Last Stand. The two-hour special featured the brave men and women of the 822nd Base Defense Squadron, better known as Reaper Team 5. These men and women were responsible for providing base security for Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.
Many of you may have tuned in last Sunday for National Geographic’s premiere of the two-hour special, Inside Combat Rescue: The Last Stand. I was recently invited by National Geographic to represent Army Wife Network at a press junket event at Moody Air Force Base prior to the documentary’s television premiere.
