Thanks to Video Chatting

Thanks to Video Chatting

While re-reading my previous post, I keep coming back to the, “You should have seen my face!” exclamation and subsequent wordy explanation of how I did see my own face—thanks to video chatting.

Lately, I have been thinking how thankful I am for video chats. Guessing I am not the only one with an increased participation in video calls, I got a little curious about the history of them.

A recent Time magazine article shared some insight into the history of video calling and how this technology took much longer than anticipated to actually take off.

PCS and Stress: A Personal Journey

PCS and Stress: A Personal Journey

It’s that wonderful time of year where we are told to move at the U.S. Army’s behest to a new area. As exciting as it is to move to a new area, it can also be overwhelming and scary. In my opinion, the most overwhelming part about PCSing is the packing!

Trying to stay organized during this time is stressful, especially when a toddler and pregnancy is added into the mix. The good news is that my family and I have a little more time to PCS than last time. The bad news is that we must do a DITY move.

But Do They Appreciate All They Have?

But Do They Appreciate All They Have?

If the title of this piece caught your eye, a number of things could have crossed your mind. Because you are most likely part of the military family, you may have thought it referred to civilians whose spouses are not at risk of dismemberment and death on their “work trips.” Or perhaps you thought it referred to other military spouses whose active duty member hasn’t deployed seven times in the last ten years.

No, I’m referring to the children many of us are raising today.

The Hike That Was Worth It

The Hike That Was Worth It

He told me we were just going on a “little” walk. It wouldn’t take that long. We’d be back in plenty of time for the sit-down dinner at the cute, little Italian restaurant in Aspen, Colorado that we had reservations for.  But at the look of how things were going, that didn’t seem likely. I was halfway up a huge mountain, so exhausted, and just wanted to be done.

My husband and I were enjoying a much-needed weekend in Aspen thanks to an Army-sponsored Strong Bonds retreat. (If you’ve never attended a Strong Bonds weekend, I highly suggest going!) We were in between sessions, and my adventurous, pilot husband decided it would fun to do a “little hike” before the dinner session started.

4 Rental Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

4 Rental Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

With all the stress a PCS can bring, the silver lining of a military move is the opportunity to create a new home in your next rental, whether it’s a property on or off the installation. The excitement often starts from afar, while staring at online photos from the home advertisement and virtually planning furniture placement and accurate window covering sizes.

Unfortunately, even with the prep work, walking into a rental home can be overwhelming as you try to picture all of your personal belongings working within an unknown floorplan. There’s rarely a perfect fit! Ceilings are too high or too low, there isn’t enough lighting, or the flooring is dated. The peculiarities are endless. This is why so many rental home decorating mistakes are made. Let’s take a look at a few common ones and how you can avoid them to create the homiest space you can, whether in a rental or installation housing:

Dress for the Occasion

Dress for the Occasion

One of our BLUFs (Bottom Line Upfront) in The Army Spouse Handbook states, “Understanding the difference in dress terms can help you be the belle of the ball instead of wearing bell-bottoms to the ball.” Complementing a service member’s uniform is a good guide; e.g. Blue Evening Mess to a Ball would indicate that a female spouse should wear a formal-to-the-floor gown or dressy cocktail dress, while a male spouse should choose a tuxedo or dark dinner jacket. However, how can we tell what to wear to a “dressy business” or “dressy casual” event? They are almost oxymorons.
