The Myth of Fort Marshall

Last month, my mom called me and asked if we could ever be stationed at Fort Marshall. I thought for a minute and told her that there wasn’t a Fort Marshall in the Army and maybe she was confused with an Air Force base.

But I was wrong. Fort Marshall does exist…on the Lifetime television network. She was referring to the fictional base on the 2007 TV show Army Wives.

Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide and in Europe, close to the medical center or hospital it serves.

Reflections on ‘Home’

It was at 11:00 at night as I was laying on a borrowed, creaky air bed in a mostly empty house, that I began thinking of our new home, one we’ve only been in for a week, as our home. There are a lot of quotes out there about what “home” is or what it means to be “home.” 

There’s a saying often heard in Army life: “Home is where the Army sends us.”

Most of us know this. We move every 2-3 years, sometimes more frequently, adding new rugs, new curtains, selling old things that might not fit, and hanging pictures to make our borrowed housing feel like home. Other things that we adore but don’t fit may go into storage, while some homes require us to buy things to fill space and we secretly hope we can fit them into the next one. Our home isn’t permanent, but temporary. It moves as we move.

How to Empower Other Military Spouses

I think most of us, whether we’ve been a spouse for one year or 20, know how it feels to be powerless in our role of “dependent.” Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting an uphill battle in our day-to-day life as our spouse trains for and fights in real battles. Many of us know what it feels like to feel completely alone. Maybe you’ve wanted to change that. Maybe you’re tired of seeing spouses tear each other down when our circumstances often do that enough already. Instead, maybe you’re looking for ways to build each other up.
