10 Realizations from My First 20 Days OCONUS

On May 22 of last year, we got our OCONUS assignment news!

It was exciting and then it wasn’t.

I was a giant ball of stress for most of our prep time before relocating overseas. I’m not going to say that the instant we landed in Japan was the moment I felt all the stress melt away, but it was close. Let’s say it was our first full day here.

When You’ve Bloomed

The military decided to plant me in Mississippi back in November 2015. Plant? Why, yes. As military spouses, you may have been offered the sage advice to “bloom where you’re planted” at least once or twice before. How do you measure how much you’ve bloomed or if you’re even budding?

The Best Thing I Wore to the Military Ball

Sometime about a week after attending our most recent military ball, I showed my husband one of the pictures we took, and I asked him about my pin. I think what I first said was, “Where did this come from?”

He responded, “From the office.”

I knew that. Of course the Army logo pin came from his office, where he, of course, works for the Army.

Budgeting Time With YearCompass

Have you heard of the magic bank account? The first time I heard of it, I was attending a faculty meeting at the elementary school where I was teaching. Believe me, all teachers want a magic bank account, so our principal certainly had our attention when she brought it up.

I wasn’t able to find the origin of the magic bank account story, but it appears to be pretty well known. It goes like this:

This is Reality

This is Reality

Growing up, my best friend and I loved to talk to each other in movie quotes. We would converse by stealing lines from the movies we saw together and loved. I remember gifting her a calendar of quotes as a present. I hope it was a daily calendar. Hope that I actually sat there and thought up 365 different quotes from movies we enjoyed together, but I can’t quite remember if I was that inspired.

Just Sincerely and Honestly: Thank You

Just Sincerely and Honestly: Thank You

Happy November! This is one of my most thankful ones yet. I am so grateful for November this year.  Especially today, November 3rd.

Today is my one year anniversary of my first “Blog Day!” Blog Day! gets its own exclamation point, not just that sentence overall. You know, because you can’t say, “blog day,” without emotion. That would just be wrong.

Blog Day! is the third of every month for me–the day that these words I am writing get pushed out and shared with an audience.

November, 3, 2017 marks the day my writing published on AWN for the very first time. I dubbed the day Blog Day! and over the past year my little personal holiday has never disappointed me.

I just can’t help it. I am absolutely stoked to have this opportunity. So, I’d like to say thank you. Thanks for the chance, for this moment, and this creative outlet. Thanks for this connection to anyone who may have enjoyed any of the over 12,000 words I’ve written over this past year. I wrote them for you, and I wrote them for me!
