Show Title: Motivation for Military Moms: Taking Care of Yourself When the World is On Your Shoulders.

Show Date:  Dec. 5, 2016

Show Number: #590

Lauren Saglimbene, from Total Lifestyle Management, chats with us about Motivation for Military Moms: Taking Care of Yourself When the World is on Your Shoulders. These are great tips on health and fitness, especially for new moms!

Lauren is an online fitness and nutrition coach and the creator of the New Mom’s Guide to Fitness video course. Lauren is currently the spouse of a Marine Corps Reservist, though he was active duty for five years prior. While she has a lot of letters after her name, she says there’s more to her than her certifications and degrees.

Lauren wears lots of hats, including mom, wife, writer, chief household chef, blogger, coach, and yoga instructor. She is also a former dancer. After several debilitating injuries, Lauren got into her field to fix her own pains and ended up staying. A travel addict, Lauren has been to Japan, Morocco, France, Italy, 24 U.S. states (including Hawaii), and two U.S. Commonwealths. Her favorite food is Cabbage Pierogis. Most importantly, she is fascinated by the human body and committed to helping people live happy, healthier lives.

Military Family News You Can Use:

The holiday season can bring a lot of joy, but it can also be very stressful. As we try to connect with friends and family from afar, sometimes we forget to connect with the most important person in our lives: our spouse. Military One Source gives six tips to help strengthen the relationship with your spouse this holiday season:

  1. Work on communication skills. Schedule 10 minutes to touch base with your partner daily.
  2. Go on a date.
  3. Do regular maintenance. Examine what’s working, and what isn’t.
  4. Plan a surprise for each other.
  5. Take a relationship class. You’ll be surprised how many installations offer relationship classes.
  6. Be active together.

Hot on AWN This Week:

As military spouses, we watch our service members gain promotions or receive awards for their work, and this often inspires us to search for our own employment that will be equally satisfying. As we think about what career will fit both a military lifestyle and bring us fulfillment, we’re often directed to earning a degree of some sort. We set our eyes on a career, we complete the education required, and then we seek to obtain that ideal job. But what happens when we are unsuccessful at landing the job we’ve worked so hard to get?

AWN Experience Contributor and AWTR Assistant Coordinator, Erica Garvin, shares how she decided to go with option B, in her post When Settling For Option B Becomes the Best Decision Ever. She writes My advice to military spouses who are currently in school and working toward their dream job is know that sometimes other opportunities will present themselves and provide for an even better job. Be openminded to everything you can do with your new degree. When you aren’t able to find a job in your field, pursue different routes that meet your goals and lifestyle.”

AWN Social Media Roundup

There is something truly magical about the holiday season which encourages us to spend more time with friends and family. But more often than not, the military sends us places where it’s hard to reconnect with family before the new year. A single image that captures this feeling can be found on our Facebook page stating, “You know you’re a milspouse when holidays usually involve a Skype or FaceTime session with either your service member or your family back home, and sometimes both.” Thankfully, modern technology has made it easier to stay connected with friends and family around the world, especially during those times when you want nothing more than family in your living room.

Public Service Announcement

Military budgets, which are often already stretched to their limits, sometimes can’t allot for Christmas presents. However, military families are also some of the most deserving people during the holiday season. To thank military families for the sacrifices made year-round, many organizations offer programs to make Christmas possible for deserving military families, especially those with children who deserve to have a joy-filled Christmas.

Go here for a listing of some of the programs and options available to military families in need.
