No, no, no. Not like that!
In my previous blog, I mentioned that I cannot drive.
That’s a big deal in the over-16-year-old circles, yes, but it is even more so when you are a military spouse.
Your spouse deploys, goes to the field, or heads to a training school…
Okay. Now what?
I distinctly remember the first time my dad chose to use a moment as a teachable moment.
I’m sure there were others, but I vividly remember when I was 6 or 7 years old and had a piece of gum or a lollipop in the car. I took the wrapper, cranked down the window (it was all hand power in the old days) and flippantly tossed the wrapper out onto the street. I’m sure I didn’t know any better (it was the early ’80s after all), but my dad caught me.
Deployments are tough—there is no way to sugar coat it. Being the spouse of a National Guard member, deployments are something that I never really thought about. I always assumed that they were something that happened to other people—people who were much better equipped to handle them.
But sure enough, I was wrong.
I feel like I blinked and found myself fist deep in a tub of cookie dough, crying, because my husband was being deployed. I read countless books and articles, and I played out thousands of scenarios in my head as to what it would be like. I thought about things, like missing out on celebrating holidays and special events, and the fact that I now would have to take out the trash and take the dog out late at night (my two least favorite chores).
I don’t know about you, but the weeks leading to the upcoming school year were stressful.
Somewhere between the mad dash of shopping for supplies with nothing but empty shelves at the stores, because “oh, school is actually happening,” and trying to prepare my 7-year-old for his new normal for school, it was a nightmare.
The whole house felt it—even the toddlers were oddly on edge, constantly fighting with each other and not getting along. When the madness within the house reached an all-time high, I soon realized that I can love my children with every single ounce of my being, but I do not have to like them.
Not even a little bit at that moment.
This month we are revisiting with Alisa Harvey. The difficulty was finding a starting point, in lieu of sharing her accomplishments I asked questions. Alisa has participated in local community and international events. You will find that retirement is not a word in her vocabulary. Alisa is relevant in the sport and being a mother has family obligations which she must manage.
COVID-19 is having an impact, but she has found ways to maintain her fitness. The environment is serious, but you do not have to put your life on hold.
Not all of us can be Alisa, but there are points which you can apply to your approach to fitness. Each person is responsible for their own fitness, and you will get out of your program what you put into it.
