Reflections on ‘Home’

It was at 11:00 at night as I was laying on a borrowed, creaky air bed in a mostly empty house, that I began thinking of our new home, one we’ve only been in for a week, as our home. There are a lot of quotes out there about what “home” is or what it means to be “home.”

There’s a saying often heard in Army life: “Home is where the Army sends us.”

Most of us know this. We move every 2-3 years, sometimes more frequently, adding new rugs, new curtains, selling old things that might not fit, and hanging pictures to make our borrowed housing feel like home. Other things that we adore but don’t fit may go into storage, while some homes require us to buy things to fill space and we secretly hope we can fit them into the next one. Our home isn’t permanent, but temporary. It moves as we move.

A New Me in 2019

If you have been following my blog, you will know that near the end of last year I started to realize that I needed to re-examine some of the choices I was making in my life, and that I needed to really focus on getting healthy. I am working on this part of my life, each and every day. Aside from some rude comments being made to me one day about my size, I was also beginning to experience episodes of apnea during illness. You can read more about that here.

How Pumping Can Increase Milk Production

Although breastfeeding brings with it many questions, one of the biggest concerns for most new mothers is whether their supply is sufficient to nourish their baby. As always, if you have any concerns about your supply, always consult your doctor. There is no website, book, or piece of friendly advice that can replace the knowledge of a medical expert.

However, if you know that you are having a supply issue—either because the amount of ounces you’re pumping has decreased or because your baby is not gaining weight (consult your doctor to know for sure)—pumping can help increase your supply.

How to Empower Other Military Spouses

I think most of us, whether we’ve been a spouse for one year or 20, know how it feels to be powerless in our role of “dependent.” Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting an uphill battle in our day-to-day life as our spouse trains for and fights in real battles. Many of us know what it feels like to feel completely alone. Maybe you’ve wanted to change that. Maybe you’re tired of seeing spouses tear each other down when our circumstances often do that enough already. Instead, maybe you’re looking for ways to build each other up.

Here are some stepping stones that can lead to the empowerment of one another as military spouses:

Meet a Cyclist Turned Runner

This is the time of the year where two conditions can work against you: dehydration and hyponatremia. The best defense is to ensure that you hydrate during the day if you are training in the late afternoon or evening. During your training you should have some type of sports drink and not just plain water. It does not take long for dehydration to set in. One way to tell is if you feel thirsty then it is too late. There may be a tendency to over drink to remedy the dehydration and it can cause the other condition hyponatremia. These two conditions affect your performance and they are preventable.

Reinventing Rosie

During WW II, thousands of women answered their nation’s call to turn off their ovens and fire up their riveters as they joined the manufacturing workforce. Between 1942 and 1948, the “Rosies” inspired the world with their rallying cry, “We can do it”.

Whether or not Rosie secretly preferred producing rivets to roast beef may be the greatest mystery of all time.
