One of the most important parts of supporting your service member as they serve our country is “holding down the fort” (See also: running a smooth, loving, and supportive home life for you and your family, while keeping all things going in your service member’s absence). Easy peasy, right? Sometimes, not so much.

With this category, we cover everything behind the scenes, such as organization, communication, marriage, parenting, overcoming trials, and just some good ole fashioned humor.

Join us as we embark on figuring out the home-life balance as a milspouse and find ways to thrive and excel! No matter what your life at home looks like, one of our Experience Bloggers or Command Team members has probably been in a similar situation and is here to share their triumphs, lessons, and laughs along the way.

Gratitude: Being Thankful

I love the month of November. Fall is in full effect with the colors changing on the trees (or the cactus, depending on which state you live in), wearing sweaters and boots, and drinking hot cocoa.

I love this time of the year, where it seems everything is slowing down because it is dark earlier in the evening. Everyone is getting ready for Thanksgiving, and Christmas is right around the corner. Additionally, this is a time where many people are on social media posting what they are thankful for. I love it because it makes you pause and think about everyday blessings.

Celebrate #GivingTuesdayMilitary

What if we had the ability to change the world? Would you do it? Would you be that person to impact another person’s life? Well, we can! I think Uncle Sam said it best, “I Want You!” But, really WE WANT YOU. You are probably wondering what we want you for.

We want you to join our movement. The movement is easy. All it involves is kindness.

OK, so now you might be thinking, “That doesn’t seem too hard. I am a kind person. Where did this idea come from?”

First Impression: Newell Dickerman

It’s said that we only have a few seconds to make a strong first impression when meeting someone new. Is that also true when it comes to reading the writing of a stranger? Let’s find out as I introduce myself to you as a new Experience Blog Contributor with Army Wife Network—and I think I’ve already used up those few seconds of time…

Changing Your Thoughts

“You can’t do it.”

“If you fail, you are going to be a failure and an embarrassment to your family.”

“Remember how you didn’t pass the other certification you were studying so hard for? This is the same. You won’t pass.”

Welcome to my mind and the negative thoughts that I hear while I am studying for a certification in finance. These specific negative voices or lies can be very powerful if you give them the power. If no power is given, they are just simple thoughts that can be quickly replaced by positive thoughts. But it is hard.

24 Wife Hours

The evening before he was set to have 24-hour staff duty, my husband asked me, “What are you going to do with your 24 wife hours?”

I had absolutely no idea.

Think about your own life for a moment. How often do you get any set period of time that is established as yours? Only yours.

You aren’t tied to anyone else’s demands, expectations, or even their company. No kids, no work, no obligations to anyone other than yourself. For 24 whole hours.

What would you say? What would you do?

Still at a loss, I started to actually think about his question and how I have this time that is most definitely all mine. Will I make it different than any other day? Would you?

Little People, Big Emotions

There I was, that mom with a screaming toddler on the floor of Chipotle. My blood pressure began to rise, I started to feel my facial pores open up, and could feel my oversupply of milk leaking. There I was, with two small humans and no spouse.

There I was, feeling like a failure.

Being a mother to a toddler is full of amazing firsts, a lot of joy, and a heart filled with love. It can also bring about challenging times. On top of those challenging times, let’s add in a new baby sister to the mix and a deployed dad. As a mother, you start to see these big emotions come through in your child—you want to help, but don’t know how. That night at Chipotle, I knew something had to change or it was going to be a long deployment.
