For us, the spouses, we have the option of being with friends and family, usually in a semi-familiar place for the holidays. We can choose what we want to do, what we want to cook and eat, what we want to buy, where we want to go. Unfortunately, our service members don’t get that luxury.

Deployment During the Holidays: Part 1
In the 13 years I've been with my service member, we've spent approximately six years of that time separated because of his military duty—whether it was for deployments, training, or simply hectic work schedules—and plenty of experience with deployment during the...
On the 10th Week of Deployment, Murphy Gave to Me…
left on Christmas Day.
My 6-year-old has had three Christmases where Daddy was either going or gone. I know we aren’t alone in that situation, but the logic of “other people are dealing with it too” is often lost on children when all they really want in front of the fireplace on Christmas morning is their deployed parent.
My Christmas Meaning: A Milspouse Poem
I am no Emily Dickinson. Definitely not even close to Robert Frost. And even though I might add a “-th” to random words and say “thou” or “thee” on occasion (just because I can), I will never be a great playwright or poet like William Shakespeare. Today, I would like to share what Christmas means to me by way of a milspouse poem. This won’t be winning any poetry awards anytime soon, but if I have fun writing it (and you get just a tiny bit of enjoyment out of reading it), then I vote yes.
Settling for Option B
When I began working toward my bachelor’s degree, I was taking online classes. I soon fell in love with the learning platform, and it became my goal to teach online. The idea of being able to work from home and to teach other students what I loved to learn about seemed like a dream job. I studied hard for many years and even earned my master’s this past June. But even with my degree and experience in hand, I wasn’t able to land the job I’d been dreaming about for four years. After six months of sending out resumes, filling out an endless amount of applications, and only receiving rejection letters, I had to start thinking about Option B. After all, I would have to start paying back those student loans in a few months.
Return to Normalcy
About two months have passed since we moved to Illinois. Things are finally starting to settle down, and we’re getting into a daily routine, which is pretty easy to do when you have an almost 10-month-old who needs naps to keep from being a grouch.
