I joined the Army Reserve nearly four years ago, and I’m grateful for all the lessons learned and experiences that being a Reservist has brought me. I definitely would not be the person that I am today had I not made the decision to join right out of high school.
Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way:
Just over one year ago, the world changed. We were thrust into a global pandemic, and we had to adapt to social distancing, staying home, and spraying disinfectant on every surface. We tried to navigate this “new normal.”
Amid this challenging year, nonprofits needed to pivot from business as usual and find innovative ways to fulfill their important missions. At the USO, a nonprofit organization that has supported America’s service members and military families for 80 years, we had to innovate our programs to this new virtual environment.
A year is a long time. As I reflect back on my husband’s year long deployment, there are a few things that I found to be deployment lifesavers:

There is a lot of focus in our world on “hunting the goodsStuff” and “finding our joy” (or if you find yourself in some of my worlds, ”embracing the suck”), and it leads me to the question that Clint Eastwood made famous…
Do you feel lucky . . . punk?
Third time’s a charm. I’ve been sitting here, stumped on how to start getting words on this page, next to my husband who has now motioned three times toward my computer. Silently cheering me on, supporting me, generally adding to the evidence of why I know I’m lucky.
There are always little things that seem lucky, like that time I won a free drink from the vending machine at work or when I won the bingo game that scored us a free four-day pass for my husband, already signed by his command to use whenever he liked.
I never had a baby shower with my previous children, due to moving during every pregnancy. As an event planning enthusiast, I knew I wanted to have one when I became pregnant with baby number three.
