Memorial Day: Is it Happy or Not?

Memorial Day: Is it Happy or Not?

Over the years, the meaning of Memorial Day has changed for me. Typically, in my early 20’s, Memorial Day was a day that commemorated the beginning of summer. I would spend the whole weekend at the beach with friends enjoying the sunshine. To me, during that season of life, it was “Happy Memorial Day.” I knew nothing different. I was uneducated on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

On “holidays” like Veterans Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day, I always see a meme on Facebook or Instagram explaining the difference between the three. This meme can be perceived in different ways.

Mandatory Fun: How Attending Social Functions Can Help You

Mandatory Fun: How Attending Social Functions Can Help You

Military life is full of social functions. Every time you turn around, you’ve got an invitation to a Family Readiness Group meeting, a coffee, or a Hail and Farewell. You’ve probably heard social functions comically referred to as “mandatory fun.” It’s no surprise to a service member that they have to attend; the military essentially “owns” their time.

5 Weird Inventions I Secretly Love

It all started when I saw an article about a “weird invention” that was a baby stroller/scooter hybrid. I thought it was brilliant. If I’d had a stroller/scooter when my kids were little tikes, I like to think we would have gone so many places—so much faster.

The MFRC is comprised of spouses or parents of service members, higher officials, and service members from each branch of the armed forces to discuss policies, procedures, plans, and initiatives that globally support military families. Meetings are open to the public, and the last meeting of the year holds a vote on which council initiatives to put in place.

We See Each Other, and That is Enough

We See Each Other, and That is Enough

When I started to write this article in honor of Military Spouse Appreciation Day, I honestly was not sure where I wanted to go with it.  I “crowdsourced” a bit to find out what the expectations were from groups of military spouses, and I received answers that ranged from “I didn’t even know there was such a day,” to “My husband gives me a spa day every year.”

(Yes, there is always one spouse getting a spa day. Let’s try to not hate her.)

But, as I dove deeper into the meaning of the day and read articles about the day’s origin (Thank you, President Reagan!) and past celebrations, I was led to ask a very important question.

Who do we really want to appreciate us on May 8?
