Did you know that July 11, is National Cheer Up The Lonely Day? I had no idea that such a day even existed but wasn’t surprised. Quite honestly, I could use a little “cheering up” myself, just like some of you.

While my husband is away on his “mission,” I am “holding down the fort,” “keeping the lights on,” or whatever other phrase you want to use. Something we, as military spouses, are more than accustomed to doing.

But, sometimes it gets old, challenging, tired, frustrating, and lonely.

Yes, I have been busy with my full-time job, taking care of the house, mowing the lawn, paying the bills, rushing home to take care of the dogs (what was I thinking agreeing to a puppy while I was the only one home?), running errands, spending time with my children (when they have time for me), and whatever else is on the to-do list.

So, how in the world could I be lonely?

When all is said and done at the end of the day, it’s me and the two dogs. We don’t really have the most engaging conversations unless it is meal time. I receive the occasional call from my husband, but the cell service is so bad that we both become frustrated because he can’t hear me, I can’t hear him, and we both have to repeat things multiple times. Tell me that’s not frustrating!

Today, as you begin your day, think about someone you can cheer up. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  •     Post an encouraging message on someone’s social media page
  •     Invite a co-worker to lunch that you normally wouldn’t
  •     Drop a card in the mail to a family member you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while
  •     Pick up the phone and call someone just to say hello and to tell them you are thinking of them
  •     Offer a genuine smile to everyone you come into contact with today

I hope you all have a fantastic day! I already feel better.
