M:M Command Team Chats Core Values: Empowerment

Welcome to M:M Command Team chats core values. We developed our Mission around seven core values and today we are focusing on the first value (Empowerment) and our commitment to the transformation of milspouses from feeling deprived to feeling unshakably empowered.

Unshakably Empowered

Wow, that feels like such a tall order to be “unshakably empowered”. What does that even mean? We believe there is not just one definition. Empowerment means different things to different people, but it really is whatever makes you confident and ready to take on the mountains you are facing.

Everyone’s Mountain Looks Different

As milpsouses, we are all empowered in unique ways and that is what we love most about our mission. We polled a variety of spouses on what they believed their “Greatest Empowering Moment” has been. No empowerment story is too small. Each experience is part of the foundation that brings us the confidence (and the Moxie) to rock our milspouse life.

Milspouses are Empowered by Advocacy.

By being an SFRG leader. I was able to help a spouse out of a dangerous domestic situation.
Helping a spouse to a hospital for mental health intervention gave me courage to help others in need.
Advocating for our branch of service as a minority tenant in a joint service environment
Making the huge leap for Mission Milspouse to NP status/rebrand
Leading my 1st women’s weekend retreat alone while husband was deployed

Milspouses are Empowered by Self Care

Seeking help for my mental health, recognizing the unhealthy generational patterns of my familial line, and becoming a pioneer to BREAK those patterns for future generations of our family.
Being the first person in my family to graduate from college with an undergrad degree… Then years later, receive my doctorate
Going back to finish my degree at age 51
Having the courage to work on my physical health
Taking the first hour of every morning just for me.
Finally pursuing my own dreams.
Learning how to budget from a healthy eating standpoint.

Milspouses are Empowered by Independence

Moving to AZ from IL by myself with my stuff in the car and my dog, living in an Airbnb alone
Working @ the USO and using my experiences to help others realize they could do hard stuff as well
Quitting a job I had tied my identity to
Going on two retreats for myself without mom guilt
Moving out of state at 23 by myself for a job
Flying to FL solo-with all 4 of my boys, and then also driving cross-country for days with them
Booking a trip to Hawaii without any leave approval
Basically, anytime I get to make my own choices, despite what the Army thinks

Milspouses are Empowered through Deployments

This last deployment, I did something just for me and finished my licensing/certification classes to be a life coach and finally launched taking clients.

I bought a car all by myself while my soldier was deployed.

I learned how to tap dance at age 44 while I had free time.

I learned how to change my own oil.

I traveled to three countries tries by myself while waiting for my service member to return.

I solo parented for a year and did not lose anyone.

What is the most empowering thing you have ever done? Don’t be shy, send us the big things and the small ones – even skinny dipping on a warm Georgia night counts! We would love to add your empowering statements to our website!

The Gift of Military Life: Why I Feel Lucky to Be a Military Spouse

The Gift of Military Life: Why I Feel Lucky to Be a Military Spouse

I never imagined that one day I would be standing at the crossroads of challenge and opportunity, wearing the title of “military spouse” and feeling lucky. Yet, here I am, an Army wife of almost 12 years, married to a soldier, raising four incredible children (ages 10, 8, 6, and 4), and homeschooling them as we navigate the ever-changing journey of military life.
