News 6 Mashup: October 3, 2022

October 4, 2022

Here is this week’s News 6 mashup of stories for the week of October 3rd, 2022, straight from AWN News 6 Correspondent, Emma Tighe.

Bad News for Balfour Beatty

A former housing manager in Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas was hit with a sound slap on the wrist in the middle of an ongoing fraud investigation, reported Reuters. Stacy Cabrera was given two years probation for her role in covering up poor housing conditions while securing the company millions in bonuses.

Cabrera says she felt “pressure” from the higher ups and was simply doing what she was told to keep her job. It was argued in court that she was a mid level employee who did not benefit financially from the deceptive behaviors she utilized.

Move Over Tony Stark, There’s a New Bionic Suit in Town

It is no secret that a common hazard of military service is chronic back pain from years of wear and tear. Training, deployments  and all the heavy loads that come with it make for strong service members but weakened spines.

This may all be in the past as the Soldier Assistive Bionic Exosuit for Resupply (or SABER for short) is getting closer to becoming a reality.

According to Tech Times, Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) will fund Vanderbilt University and HeroWear to prepare the exosuit for production and field use.

Here’s hoping our military men and women can continue to be the backbone of our nation with a little less stress on their own!

Wasting Away For Free On Margaritaville Cruises

Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville at Sea is offering free Bahama Cruises to active and veteran military members!

The website reads “For your dedication to serving our communities at home and abroad, Margaritaville at Sea invites all active and veteran military, first responders, law enforcement officers and educators to sail free on a much-deserved 3-day, 2-night cruise to Grand Bahama Island.”

Participating cruisers must be registered through the Govx ID platform and may have two qualified members per state room.

Today in History

And last but not least: On this day in 1863 Abraham Lincoln declared that a day of Thanksgiving was to be annually celebrated on the last Thursday of November. An unofficial holiday since the Washington days, Honest Abe made it official and I for one am grateful that he did so!

  • Emma Tighe is a lover of news, humor and writing, making her position of News 6 correspondent quite literally a dream come true. She hails from absolutely nowhere and everywhere, as she was an army brat. Emma has been an army spouse for 11 years and has five children, whom she homeschools. Somewhat successfully, depending on the week. In college, her choir director said she should’ve majored in comedy. Her theory professor told her she should’ve majored in writing. They must have been right, as she is still attempting to do both. Emma and her family have lived in five different bases (but 8 separate moves and yes this is important to her) and currently call Fort Leavenworth, KS home. Emma is an active volunteer, believing that information is power, and the best way to empower new or struggling spouses is to provide them with resources and tools to learn how to advocate for themselves and their families. You Serve Too! I’ve been a military spouse for six years, and in many ways, I know we’ve been incredibly blessed. My husband is on full-time orders as a recruiter, which has allowed us to stay in Upstate New York for the entirety of our marriage.
