We here at Army Wife Network want to take the some of the guesswork out of the need-to-knows about duty stations around the globe. Hence, our Post With the Most series. In this particular blog, we will be showcasing information related to Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

Fort Belvoir is located on the Virginia-Maryland border, relatively close to the nation’s capital. Fort Belvoir is surrounded by other cities, making this location a more metropolitan area than other duty stations. Fort Belvoir includes three components—the main installation, Davison Army Airfield, and Fort Belvoir North Area—and houses two major command headquarters, 10 major commands, 19 Army agencies, eight Reserve and Guard elements, and elements from other military branches.

Weather: Like much of the east coast, the climate at Fort Belvoir is humid during the summer, so average temperatures of high-80s often feel warmer. Fort Belvoir has a higher average of rainfall than the rest of the country and experiences snow during the winter months. Winter temperatures tend to average a high of mid-40s and a low of high 20s. Due to the humidity, winter temperatures also may seem colder than they are.

Historical Facts/Landmarks: The site of Fort Belvoir was originally the home of William Fairfax, tax collector, who purchased the property in the 1730’s. Fort Belvoir was founded as Camp A.A. Humphreys during World War I and renamed Fort Belvoir in the 1930’s.


On-post housing is owned and managed by Fort Belvoir Residential Communities. The Housing Services Office offers resources and assistance with off-post housing. Due to Fort Belvoir’s location, there are a wide variety of homes and cities to choose from when considering off-post housing.
