Field Problem: Struggling with Credit Card Debt

Editor’s note: This Field Problem™ has been edited to protect personally identifiable information. Because credit card debt a common issue for military members and their families, we’re bringing it to you.

Dear, Field Problems:

My husband is in the Army, and we have a lot of credit card debt. It is a struggle to pay them each month along with other bills. Any suggestions on the best way to deal with our credit card debt so we have some financial freedom?

Concerned Army Spouse

Dear Concerned Army Spouse,

Thank you for writing to us. Credit card debt can be difficult to get out from under. Thankfully, there are some resources available to military families that may help.

First of all, I would highly recommend taking the Dave Ramsey Financial University workshop designed specifically for military families. Have your husband check with his unit chaplain or the Religious Support Office, who may be able to tell him when and where the next workshop will take place.

Another resource is Army Community Services, which offers financial readiness assistance. You can find more information about financial readiness here.

Additionally, Military OneSource has some great information about getting out of credit card debt.

We hope you find this information helpful, and we wish you luck on your journey.
