‘What IF…’

‘What IF…’

Right now, I am sitting in an airplane going with my husband to a class in Kansas. This class is special, since no children are allowed. It is the first time in 12.5 years that we are alone for six days—date nights not counting. When my husband told me about the opportunity to go to this class without our children, my first thoughts were:

“Who is going to watch our children?”

“Is this class really so important for me to be there as well?”

“What if something happens to the kids while I am gone?”

“What if…”

The Winter of our Discontent

The Winter of our Discontent

I know. I know. It’s March. The last month of winter. Will it ever end?

However, it’s one of my favorite months (anniversary month!), and since I’ve been hostage in the south where the temps range from 50-70 degrees, I can’t complain. Rainy days are plenty and maybe I miss the sun some weeks, but when the sun does come out… it’s like a summer day. No shoveling snow. No bundling up to go outside.

But this blog isn’t about the weather, it’s about the Winter of Discontent (…of life).

Otherwise known as a Midlife Crisis.

Building Love Maps in Your Marriage

Building Love Maps in Your Marriage

I love those first few weeks when I PCS to a new place. Undaunted by a lack of household goods or limited leave, I load my family up every morning to go out exploring our new home. Driving around the installation aimlessly but full of intention.

We speculate on which park we will enjoy walking to the most or which of a town’s kitschy diners we will frequent on Sundays after church. Taking it all in. Learning the main roads at first, the way to the commissary, the PX, then gradually picking up on the backways and roundabout shortcuts. By the time your stay is halfway up, you know how to avoid gate traffic and where to go to meet your friends for coffee or lunch. Though no matter how well you have become acquainted with it, the town you leave is seldom the same town when your moving truck arrived. The place you have all your socials closes down and is replaced by another restaurant, new boutiques open on Main Street. Of course, just before you leave, you begin discovering fascinating places and activities that have been there all along, but you never knew.

Our marriages are similar.

Tuning Your Radio: Part 1

Tuning Your Radio: Part 1

Every month, without fail, I struggle to think of what I should write about.

What kind of profound piece of enlightenment can I possibly share with AWN readers?

My personal Jiminy Cricket strikes again, offering a moment of clarity (usually, right after a moment of absolute chaos). Lately, I have noticed many of my decisions and reactions are hugely impacted by what kind of environment I am surrounding myself with, as well as the useful or harmful voice in my head. What shows am I watching? What books am I reading? What music am I rocking out to?

And most importantly, what people am I allowing to infiltrate my tiny spot in the universe? Each answer can have a precise impact on how my mood, mindset for decisions, and general outlook on life.
